Friday's Feast

Have you checked out today's interview at The Long and the Short of It? We are interviewing Lori Foster and having a super giveaway. Go... read... enjoy.

If it's Friday, it MUST be time for Friday's Feast. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, grab a cookie or two, and enjoy.

Who is the easiest person for you to talk to? My husband. We can, and do, talk about everything. He's not only the love of my life; he's my best friend.

If you could live in any ancient city during the height of the quality of its society and culture, which one would you choose? I don't know that this qualifies as "ancient" but I would have loved to live in Charleston during the time it was truly the Belle of the South. Such a gracious time.

What is the most exciting event you’ve ever witnessed? the birth of my niece, Lyndee. I had c-sections with all of my own kids, so missed seeing them born. But Lyndee was born at home, with a midwife in attendance. I was able to be there and gave her her first bath. Then wrapped her in a blanket that had been my baby blanket.

Main Course
If you were a celebrity, what would you do for a publicity stunt? Hmmm.. I guess it would depend on what I was trying to advertise. Publicity just for the sake of publicity is useless .. yeah, I know they say that the only bad publicity is no publicity, but if you are a writer (and it's writers I mostly market) you want to encourage people to buy the books. And... no matter how much publicity SOME celebrities manage to garner, it doesn't make me willing to spend hard-earned money on anything they've written. Does that make me weird?

What do you consider the ideal age to have a first child? I don't think there IS an ideal age. Obviously, the parent needs to be old enough and mature enough to be able to give the baby what it needs, but other than that... when it happens it happens.

If you want to play along...

Thursday Things

The Long and the Short of It is instituting something brand new today. Thrifty Thursdays will feature FREE short stories for your reading enjoyment. Go here to read our first story, a charming little love story by our own Marianne. Also, we are now a non-paying market for flash fiction. If you are interested in submitting, please check out our submission guidelines.
If it's Thursday, it must be time for

There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?

Everyone I know, pretty much, are readers. Bob used to be as avid a reader as I am, but life got in the way. He's well on his way, now, to becoming one again. We both have several books on our bedside table and read every night before turning out the light. He also does a lot of reading on the computer.. he loves tales of sailing and boating.

All of our kids read all the time. As a matter of fact, Beth spent her vacation with us curled up in my papasan chair with a book. Her job keeps her so busy she doesn't get to read as much as she likes, so she made up for it this past weekend.
And now.. for our daily quiz:

Your Gemstone is Orange Saphire

Courageous, optimistic, and successful.
Your confidence helps you handle the ups and downs of life

Tuesday Tired

:::YAWN::: Color me tired this morning... but happy. We had a great first day and the fun isn't over yet. Our winner was chosen for Day One of our Grand Opening party, the virtual refreshments have been replenished (what a hungry bunch y'all were) and the banners were put back up (whoever was swinging from the chandeleir... I hope you had fun!)

We have a new author interview up... a new contest...

yep, color me tired, but also color me

Also color me proud. Marianne's two current stories for The Wild Rose Press are BOTH in the current best-seller's list. WHOO-HOO! If you haven't bought "Magic" or "Pregnancy Cravings" yet... what are you waiting for? They are awesome! It's the best $1.50 per story you could spend... trust me.
You Are 35% Addicted to Blogthings

Okay, so you know how to take and post a Blogthing.
But you're no addict. (Hey, this quiz *proves* it!)
For you, Blogthings is more of a healthy habit.
At least, that's what you tell yourself!

~One reason I'm not as addicted as Marianne is that I swipe them from her.. more than going to the source, as it were. I HAVE been more addicted, though.... when I first started blogging! Evidence: this, this, this, and this. Hmmmm... I had forgotten that last one. Wouldn't that make a great pen name? Or a character for my Irish story... if I ever get around to working on it?

Let us know what you like... let us know what you don't like... let us know what you WOULD like to see. Questions? Ask away. Comments? We welcome them.

Doreen was our big winner in the pre=Grand Opening contest. Go by and tell her congratulations.

Also, first in our author spotlight is ... well, go find out. All I'm going to say is she's a wonderful author and has a lot of fun things planned for this week as well.

Marianne and I have done it again... we match. Other than our personality types (with her being a type A++++ and me being a Type Z, we complement each other) we are more alike than not... oh.. and she's tall. :-)

Friday's Feast 157

Say there’s a book written about your life. Who would you want to narrate the audio version? hmmmmmm... better get someone who has a sexy voice, because the book written about my life would probably not be very interesting :-)

Take the letters from your favorite kind of nut and write a sentence. (Example: Perhaps every avenue needs understanding today.) Perhaps editing can add new strength.

If you could go back in time and spend one week in another decade, which decade would you choose? Hmmmmm.... there are so many times in the past I enjoy reading about and many of them would be interesting to visit.... let's say the 1770's :-)

Main Course
Name a song that brings back memories for you. Music has always been such an important part of my life, it would be easier to name songs that don't. One song, though, that always makes me feel homesick is Phil Coulter's Bantry Bay. Lianne, Kathy, and I played his Forgotten Dreams CD while we were traveling in Ireland. To this day, whenever I hear the opening strains of that CD I'm instantly transported back.

Do you prefer to wash your hands in cold water or warm water? Warm water.. cold water makes my hands cramp.

If you want to play.. it's still not too late. Just let us know here.

August Happiness Challenge- Day Twenty-three

~~~~~I'm happy because I SLEPT last night! As I said yesterday my insomnia was playing up and I didn't get a bit of sleep. So, sleep is good...:-) Thankfully, I don't have nights like that often, not like some people I know.
~~~~~And, I'm happy because I've decided to join a new weekly meme.

Booking It As a Family

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

Our family absolutely shared a love for reading. My aunt, cousins, and sister ALL have stacks of books sitting around their house. Anytime I go to visit, I can always count on coming home with new reading material. And, there were always books at the house. I remember one time (I was maybe eight or nine), Mama walked in and I was reading From Here to Eternity. She said, "Don't you think that books a little too old for you?" I didn't tell her it was my third time reading it :-)

Granted, there were things in the book that were inappropriate for an eight-year-old, but I didn't understand them anyway... so just skipped those parts. That's one benefit (among many) benefits reading has over things like movies and television. THOSE images can stay with you, whether you are emotionally ready for them or not.

Click on the picture to join us .... and let me know that you're playing along.

~~~~~And now... the daily quiz I'm swiping from Marianne:
You Are a Carousel
You are young at heart and a truly playful person. No one would ever accuse you of taking life too seriously.
You are definitely in things for the fun. You find joy easily, and you are often building up anticipation for your next adventure.
In relationships, you tend to want to be babied and taken care of.
And while you may be a bit high maintenance, you are incredibly loyal.
Your life is simple and satisfying. Each day you treat yourself to something you enjoy.
You have a lot of emotional attachments, and experiences are extra vivid to you.
You tend to be nostalgic and sentimental. The past is important to you.
Comfortable around all living things, you have a special connection to animals and children.
At your best, you are whimsical, free spirited, and creative.
Even if your schemes seem a bit strange, they usually work out wonderfully.
At your worst, you are spoiled, demanding, and impossible to satisfy.
You've been known to act like a brat if you aren't getting your way!
Other than being high maintenance, which I really don't think I am, this isn't far off the target. And... I don't think I'm EVER at my worst ;-) What do y'all think?
~~~~~~ And, if you haven't entered the LASR pre-Grand Opening contest yet, what are you waiting for? Time is drawing to a close. Go here and enter, already!!

August Happiness Challenge- Day Twenty-two

I'm happy.. but also getting a bit tired. I had a bout of insomnia last night.. but I'm happy that I was able to finish reading Book Four of The Outlander series (so, Lianne, hurry up and finish!!! There's SO much I want to talk about!!)

And.. I'm happy we got part of our equipment fixed and it looks like Murphy has left the building. I'm sorry if he's moved to where one of you live, but he was here all day Monday... so I'm glad to see him leave. Hopefully today we will get caught up and back on track.

And.. since my brain is fried from no sleep.... here's my daily quiz stolen from Marianne:

You Are Somewhat Like Your Mom

Believe it or not, you and your mom are pretty darn similar.
It may not seem like it at times, but you and your mom have a lot of common ground.
Over time, you'll probably get closer ... especially if you emphasize the things you like about each other.

Pre-Grand Opening Contest***

I am so excited and so happy! For a while, I didn't think this day would EVER come. But, Marianne and I have been working diligently and now we are ready for the big announcement.

As you all know, we have the most wonderful review blog. If you haven't visited over there, why not? And... go... but then come right back. You don't want to miss the big news.

In addition to our review blog, we are announcing the creation of The Long and the Short of It, the website. Not only will we have the reviews you all love, we will have a whole lot more. The website goes live on Monday, August 27 with a super Grand Opening Party. And... we want to give YOU a chance to get in on the fun early, so we are having a pre-Grand Opening contest.

Contest? Did you hear someone say 'contest'? You know me... you know how I LOVE to give things away. Well, this is the monster giveaway and I'm having so much fun!

There are a few of ways you can enter this wondrous contest:
1. Leave a comment on this post. (please make sure you leave a link where we can contact you if you win!)
2. You can share the good news about the contest on your own blog. Simply link to us in your blog entry then fill out the Mr. Linky here. Please use the url to the actual blog entry, please.
3. You can sign up for our newsletter here.

And, that's it.

What? I haven't told you the prize yet? How can I forget the most important thing??? Blame it on the blonde roots :-)

We're a book site, right? What else would we be giving away but... books? We will be sending to one lucky reader in the USA or Canada this nifty tote bag plumb stuffed with books (new, gently used, or ARCs), along with some wonderful sweet smellin' bath goodies so you can lay back in the tub and relax while you read all your new books. Our international readers are encouraged to enter the contest as well, however due to postage cost restraints, the winner will be sent a $30 Amazon gift certificate.

So... you know the prize, you know the rules... go and tell everyone. And... remind them to check out The Long and the Short of It on Monday, August 27, for our Grand Opening Bash... and to find out the winner of the contest.

The pre-Grand Opening Contest ends at noon, Eastern Time, Sunday, August 26, 2007.

August Happiness Challenge- Day Twenty-one

I've been away the past four days... not in flesh, but in spirit. We've had four VERY busy days with work and with trying to get the last minute things finished for the Grand Opening launch of the new website.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am. We've gotten some great comments on it, and that makes me happy :-) We've also got some wonderful authors lined up to interview. First and foremost is the New York Times best-selling author Lori Foster. You do NOT want to miss our interview with her. It's the interview on Monday. And, that week, we will have interviews and contests Monday through Friday.

Oh.. and speaking of contests, if you haven't signed up to win our bag of goodies yet, what on earth are you waiting for? Go to this post to discover all the juicy details! And.. be sure and tell all your friends. The contest ends this Sunday at noon Eastern Time. And.. the winner will be posted on the website Monday morning.

Another wonderful thing is happening this weekend. Our oldest daughter called and she's going to be coming to visit us. We're very excited about this as we don't get NEAR enough time to spend with our kids. That's what happens when they fly away. Thankfully, sometimes they "fly" back home for visits :-)

What's making you happy this morning?

And.. I like Marianne's idea of posting a quiz every day so much, I'm stealing it. And, fortunately, she gets up WAY earlier than I do... so I can just swipe it from Let's see how much my business partner and I really ARE alike.

Your Inner Eye Color Is Blue

You've got the personality of a blue eyed women
You're intense and expressive - and always on the go
You've also got a sweet, playful side - which draws men in

Well, we're alike in that our inner eye color is the same as our outer eye color. :-) Because, yep, I'm the proverbial blue-eyed, blonde..and... yes, I AM 5'2.... so I leave you with this:

August Happiness Challenge - Day Seventeen and Friday Feast

I thought I would be happy because today was Friday and we didn't have to work tomorrow. Unfortunately, the best laid plans... our equipment malfunctioned (the ignition switch died). So, Bob has to get that fixed and we'll probably go out and finish our work tomorrow. We already have a full week scheduled next week as well. Mixed blessings.

But, one thing I AM happy about... it's Friday and that means it's time for Friday's Feast.

Describe your laundry routine. Do you have a certain day when you do it all, or do you just wash whatever you need for the next day? I normally do most of my laundry on the weekend (during the week it's just too hectic.... ).

In your opinion, what age will you be when you’ll consider yourself to truly be old? Old? OLD??? Heck, I haven't even grown up yet.....

What is one of your goals? Is it short-term, long-term, or both? One of my goals is to pull a winning name from the entries of our pre-Grand Opening contest going on for The Long and the Short of It. It might be you. Just sign the sticky note here and go here and find out how to get extra entries.

Main Course
Name something unbelievable you’ve seen or read lately. I'm trying to build my new personal website. It's unbelievable how much trouble I'm having... does that count?

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how happy are you today? Didn't you see the title???? ;-) I'm VERY happy... at least an eleven.

If you're playing along today... sign up here and let us know about it.

August Happiness Challenge- Day Fourteen

I have some super happy news. Two of my writing friends, Charity and Darcy, have just announced they have an agent for their collaborative work. Read about it here. I've read bits and pieces of it and I'm waiting with anticipation to read the new version (uhhhh... ladies.. that IS a hint!).

Go over to Charity's and offer them both your congratulations. It is well deserved and way past time!

And, don't forget to register for the contest on the sticky note.

August Happiness Challenge- Day Twelve

I've told y'all that the thing that makes me the happiest is my family. Well, this morning when I checked my mail, I had a note from my first born that made me smile and I wanted to share it with you all.

Hey, I was just playing around on the internet and googled your name and came up with a ton of different websites with your stories and such. Have I told you lately how proud I am of you?

Isn't she beautiful? And.. she's coming home to see us soon.. and that makes me happy as well.

And...are you ready for this? TOMORROW is the big day... where you will find out what my big secret is. I wonder if anyone has figured it out yet?

A great contest for you... and me :-) I LOVE contests (betcha didn't know that, did you?) Well, have I got a contest to share with you.

August Happiness Challenge- Day Ten and Friday's Feast

First and foremost, I'm happy today is Friday and I have the day off! People, let me tell you, working outside in the heat we've had the past few days (100 degrees real temperature/ heat index 110-115) has been... well, I was going to say for the birds, but even most of the birds had the good sense to stay where it was shady and cooler! We did what we could... frequent breaks (we have an inverter and a fan we keep on our bucket truck) and drank PLENTY of water. But... I'm glad we're not working today. It's supposed to be even hotter than yesterday.

Secondly, I'm happy that Marianne has TWO short stories being released on Wednesday, August 15. Next week is going to be busy, because on Monday...nope, you'll just have to wait until Monday.

And, third, I'm especially happy I get to share something very special with y'all today. You may remember I told you about my friend Allie's book, One Night in Boston being released. Well, now she has created a truly delightful trailer for the book. Watch the trailer then, if you haven't already, go buy the book. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

And, here's the latest installment of Friday's Feast.

What is your favorite kind of pie? I like several pies: Shoney's strawberry pie (here is a "copy cat" recipe. I haven't tried making it yet), pecan pie, pumpkin and/or sweet potato pie (but only at Thanksgiving). If I had to choose just one... probably pecan pie, as long as it's not too sweet.

Name something that made you smile this week. LOL... read my posts for the entire week. This is August Happiness Challenge, after all. It's not too late to join in the fun. Snatch the button: and join in the fun. Let me know if you do... I'd love to come visit and find out what makes you happy this month.

What do you do to cool off when the weather is hot and humid? Stay inside where it's cool, if at all possible! If not, drink lots of water and try to get in the shade.

Main Course
You receive $1,000 in the mail with a letter that says you can only use the money to redecorate one room in your home. Which room do you pick, and what do you buy to spruce it up? Our kitchen is in the worse shape... we're slowly redecorating the rest of the house. I would probably buy the tile for my kitchen floor. I'm leaning towards white with a cornflower blue accent, if I can find it. It's one of those things... when I see it, I'll know it. I have a picture in my head... now just to try to find the reality. :-)

Fill in the blank: My _________ says __________, but I __________.
My husband says I'm beautiful, but I think he needs his eyes checked.

Go to Friday's Feast and let us know if you are playing along this week.

Thursday, August 09, 2007

August Happiness Challenge- Day Nine

There are a couple of things that make me happy today. One is that (hopefully) we will finish the two jobs we started yesterday and will be able to take tomorrow and the weekend off. Not only because working outside in a heat index of 110+ degrees is no fun, but because I have to get ready for Monday.

Monday is.... a surprise :-) That's when the news I've been alluding to will be revealed. So... stay tuned. It's an exciting time.

I am already exhausted. I woke up at 3 AM and couldn't get back to sleep, so (of course) now that it's about time to get up, I'm ready for bed. Go figure....

Hope everyone has a great day and keeps cool.

Because I'm brain dead, I stole this from Marianne:

Your Brain is 73% Female, 27% Male

Your brain leans female
You think with your heart, not your head
Sweet and considerate, you are a giver
But you're tough enough not to let anyone take advantage of you!

Tuesday, August 07, 2007

August Happiness Challenge- Day Eight

Happy day today. I'm sorry this is a late post (and, Marianne, I'm not sure why my post time-dated so late... that was weird. I'll check on it), but we haven't been home from work long. So... I'm happy to be home. I got to do something really cool today, though. I went up in the bucket truck for the first time ever and it was like riding an amusement park ride! I can't wait to go back up :-)

Another happy thing... when I got home there was a message on my answering machine. Two books I've been waiting to get to the library.... ARE IN! (Lianne, I get to start on Book Four of the Outlander books!!!!) In case you haven't heard of Diana Gabaldon and her Outlander series, go here to read a good review.

And... a very special happy thing... tomorrow is my friend Jill's birthday. Please go over there and tell her happy birthday. She's going through a not-so-great time and a lot of birthday greetings will perk her up, I think. So... please go tell her "Happy Birthday" :-)

One last thing that makes me happy today..... I'm about to head off to bed. Night, all.

August Happiness Challenge- Day Six

This makes me happy:

You are 90% Smarter than a fifth grader.

You are smarter than a fifth grader. no doubt. There is no need for you to retake school. Keep on doing your brain excersise like sudokus and crossword puzzles, and you'll soon be smarter than a sixth grader! Good work!

are you smarter than a fifth grader?
Quiz Created on GoToQuiz

I scored the same as Marianne. I wonder what question I missed? I think I know.. I have to do some research to be sure. (BTW, if I had scored LOWER than Marianne, this portion of the post would have never seen the light of day.... just sayin', in an effort to keep this blog honest.

Our new venture (which REALLY makes me happy, but that is happy news for another day) is coming along. So... keep tuned in so you can find out (one day) our surprise! It won't be long.. I promise.

Believe it or not... today has been declared National Fresh Breath Day. Yeah, I know... I couldn't believe it either? Do you suppose I should buy stock in breath mints today?

You don't want to be the only one not celebrating this special day. So, from the founder of this day, here are some tips for you:(my comments are in italics

1. Brush your teeth, cheeks and gums with a chlorine dioxide toothpaste. cheeks? uhhhhhh....
2. Comb your tongue. I actually brush mine... you reckon that counts?
3. Use a hydromagnetic irrigator.
4. Wash your mouth with a stabilized chlorine rinse.
5. Sip room temperature water or mint lemon water.
6. Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks as they dry your mouth. Trust me... you do NOT want me to avoid my coffee... it would not be a pleasant sight.
7. Use a mouth moisturizer or a saliva stimulant to keep your mouth moist.
8. Eat fresh breath herbs like parsley, dill, basil or peppermint.
9. Place a mint pouch in your mouth - it's good for 3 hours of minty breath. Ignore the fact that you might look like you are chawin' a wad of tobacco
10. Read "Breathless ..." for more detailed fresh breath advice.I actually found a link to the pamphlet she's talking about here... it was broken, so I didn't include it.

In honor of this special day, I bring you this very important message on the dangers of halitosis and what could conceivably happen should you ignore today.(Warning: it's long, but imho, well worth the time... you've GOT to see the end)

August Happiness Challenge--Day Four

Edited to change the link to point to Contest Blogger. And here is the reason why.

Another thing that makes me happy is contests. I really enjoy entering contests and telling all of you about them. Here's a contest that I almost could not believe! Ashwin is giving away $2500. Yep, you read that right... two thousand five hundred dollars. And, all you have to do is post the following text on your blog to be entered in the drawing:

Over at Ashwin’s blog, you will find one crazy blog owner!! You can win $2500!! To enter just copy this text and paste it in your blog!! But hurry, this competition will not last long! So get posting!

So, I'm entered. When you finish reading this post (no, don't go now.. you have to wait and find out my favorite silly song and whether anyone won the contest!) rush over to Ashwin's and enter yourself!

Unfortunately, nobody guessed what my favorite song is. I have to admit.. it was tough picking a favorite because they are all SO good. But... here... it is... and I hope you all enjoy my very favorite silly song from the Veggies:

Friday's Feast 154 and August Happiness Challenge Day Three

Oh, my goodness. I was working so hard this morning I completely forgot today was Friday!! Here, better late than never, is my entry. If you are going to play along, leave a comment at Friday's Feast.

*This feast contains leftovers from April 2006. Consume at your own risk!*

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how polite are you? Okay, as everyone knows I'm a GRITS, so of course I'm going to be polite, bless your heart. My mama would take a switch to me if I was anything but. :-)

What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud? Marianne and I were chatting working last night and we started talking about silly songs. I jumped right over to You Tube and looked at all the VeggieTale videos I could find. And, then shared them with my husband. I had to laugh at his reaction. He admitted they were cute, but also admitted he had thought I was kidding when I told him I hadn't grown up yet. Now he knows better :-)

Who is your favorite cartoon character? I don't have a favorite any more. I don't particularly like the cartoons these days. My favorite was Mighty Mouse.

Main Course

August Happiness Challenge - Day Two

I know it's late, but technically it's still day two... at least for another two and a half hours. And, that's a long time. Just ask my friend Marianne. We were supposed to be working, but ended up chatting about all kinds of things (Silly Songs with Larry, from VeggieTales being one example) for TWO AND A HALF HOURS! Can you believe it? (Oh.. M... the song I was thinking of is "The Song of the Cebu"... NOT "The Water Buffalo"... you were right, in that I was wrong.)

Since we were talking about Silly Songs from Larry, if you are familiar with the talented Veggies... guess which one is my favorite. (Marianne, you aren't allowed to guess.) This song makes me..... what's the key word for this month????.... HAPPY! If you guess the right song, I have a special prize for you. :-)

Actually, music makes me happy. Sometimes I'm in the mood for silly songs (today was a silly day, as you might could have guessed), other times I'm in the mood for something more soothing. So, while you are trying to figure out my favorite VeggieTales song...btw, you can find all the songs here... let me leave you with this video to enjoy. I hope it brings you happiness.

August Happiness Challenge - Day One

I've found out from Southern Girl that this is the month for the August Happiness Challenge. In honor of the month, I created the happy button above. Feel free to snatch it, if you like, and join in the challenge: to write about something that makes you happy every day in the month of August.

And, with this being day one, I have to tell you what makes me happiest is my family.

Bob and I truly enjoy each other's company.. and it's a good thing, since we work together. :-)

I have the best family in the world and I'm very proud of all our kids. They are great and it's wonderful to have them in my life.

What about you? Why don't you join me for the August Happiness Challenge?
