Win a Special Prize Basket: Omega Team

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions to celebrate the release of the new authors taking part in Desiree Holt's Omega Team Kindle World. Kindle Worlds is a publication platform featuring Worlds which are really extended series where authors can write in a particular licensed World. Although they are open to everyone, it works best when the author who owns the World invites authors she believes will be a good fit. Each World has 3 launches per year and many include repeat authors. Often authors write a series within a series-their now 3-story arc within the Kindle World. You can see them all here. The authors will be awarding a prize basket including Omega Team mug, Desiree's 3 books in the Omega Team series, Omega Tote Bag, and I love to read T shirt. (US only for physical prize; international winners will receive an alternate prize) to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

Former Delta Force team leader Grey Holden came from a long line of military leaders who believed the important thing was getting the job done, not boosting your ego. They called themselves Omega Men. Athena Madero left the police department angry at all the restrictions she faced as she tried to fight crime. Grey and Athena collided, literally, when both were working a covert investigation, the resolution of which resulted in the birth of The Omega Team. Others will join them as the agency expands its scope of activities to range from hostage negotiation and rescue to industrial espionage to fighting drug cartels to threats to national security. They will be led by Grey and Athena, whose passion for their work is only rivaled by their passion for each other. Welcome to a series that combines high danger with intense passion and heady romance.

Dangerous Impulse by Taige Crenshaw

Choices lead to many paths but making one without thought leads to one that will change you forever as you embrace a dangerous impulse…

Jordan Zain is used to two reactions from people— fear or wanting to possess her. Being one of the Zain siblings has a notoriety…one she didn’t want or need. All of her siblings felt the same yet it was something they could not escape. Now she was being protected whether she wanted to be or not. She wasn’t one to just accept things and this time was no different. They’d sent a man who was familiar to her but it didn’t matter. Darius was stubborn and she was not able to shake him out of his formidable control. It was a challenge that she was more than up to taking it head on.

Darius Quinn didn’t like his current assignment but he’d do it. Protecting the life of a woman whose family was close to his and he’d grown up with should have been easy. Yet there was nothing easy about Jordan Quinn. The woman knew how to push all his buttons yet he could not let her see that. Jordan was someone he needed to keep at a professional distance if he wanted to keep his control. The problem is with Jordan she didn’t follow along with anyone else’s plan. She was not only knocking down his walls but making him want things he should not. Not with her.

Two strong willed people who both want their way must realize sometimes what you need isn’t what you get but when you accept what is to come you must give into a dangerous impulse….

Taige Crenshaw has been enthralled with the written word from time she picked up her first book. It wasn’t long before she started to make up her own tales of romance. With interracial and multicultural novels set in today, in alternate dimensions, or in the future she writes with adventure, fun sassy heroines, and sexy heroes.

Always hard at work creating new and exciting places Taige can be found curled up with a hot novel with exciting characters when she is not creating her own. Join her in the fun, frolic, interesting people and far reaches of the world in her novels.

Dangerous Pursuit by McKenna Jeffries

Going after what you want isn’t usually a problem yet this time it’s more important than any other and it will take careful maneuvering to win this dangerous pursuit…

Jana Taylor didn’t shy away from anything or anyone. Working with a lawyer wasn’t usually an issue but it was him. The infuriating man who set her on edge and made her want to deck him as well as kiss him equally. It was a routine escort for some business for the company she worked for or so it should have been. Now they were in danger and they didn’t know if it was because of the company she worked for or something Elliot did for his law firm. Figuring it out would be fun since she loved puzzles but working with him not so much. Elliot didn’t seem to understand that he was in danger and it was her job to protect him. His stubborn instance he could protect himself would either get him killed or she would give into temptation and deck him…or maybe kiss him. Possibly both.

Elliot Stephenson wasn’t about to hide from anything or anyone. In his family you stood up and fought. According to what was needed it could be dirty or giving someone a fair shot. Either way it was ingrained in him to win any battle in and out of the boardroom. Almost dying wasn’t something he usually had to handle in his job as a corporate lawyer but since someone tried to kill him then he would adapt. Now it was his goal to get to the bottom of who it was then eliminate the problem. Having her—Jana Taylor—who was determined to protect him by his side was a good thing. For him. He’d been wondering how he’d get her to stop avoiding him and face what was simmering between them. Now with their circumstances she would have no choice. He wasn’t going to just be a protectee and would take part in protecting himself but he also knew he needed her. Not just to save his life but to also become part of it.

When stubbornness meets an obstacle they cannot overcome they have to learn to work together to embrace the dangerous pursuit.

McKenna Jeffries has loved the written word from time she picked up her first book. Soon she was creating tales of love and family. Although McKenna used to make up stories she never thought to put them on paper until....she realized the stories would keep filling her until they were written. Since then she's been writing and sharing her interracial/multicultural books. There is always some new story floating around her head. An itchy feeling in her fingers fills her until she can get a piece of paper to write it down. She writes because it's a love affair. Writing is in her blood and she enjoys taking readers on a journey.

With so many ideas filling her, McKenna is always hard at work.

Recon Strong by Krista Ames

Dirk Rockwell knew when he left the Marines that he wanted to be in private security. The need to protect had been ingrained in his brain for too many years not to. Lately, however, it was really taxing his nerves. He was used to killing if he needed to, to protect his charge, not step in between a disgruntled husband and wife during a domestic dispute. When he took on the latest assignment to protect a woman who’d snapped one too many secret photographs, he’d only agreed because an old friend had recommended him. Meeting Avery proved to him that not all women needed protection equally.

Avery Hanson lived for the rush of almost getting caught. That’s why she chose freelance photography as a profession. The sticky part was when she did get caught. However, this time wasn’t like the usual quick brush with the local law where she could talk herself out of it with a slap on the hand. She’d somehow gotten mixed up in some nasty hush hush with the federal government. This time, she didn’t just need out of yet another mess, she needed help staying alive.

Without the necessary channels to cover both their asses, Dirk enlists the help of The Omega Team. But will it be enough to keep him from losing his charge and his heart?

Krista Ames was born and raised in Indiana. She now resides in Northern Michigan with the love of her life and their 4 children. She is a full time stay-at-home mom and pursues her writing career when she's not chasing kids, cooking or doing laundry.

To the insatiably curious—science is the greatest adventure. So, when scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the ‘God’ particle in 2012, all the world wondered, “How did they find it?”

A decade later, despite his past academic failures and egregious family circumstance, Andrew Lawrence embarked on a journey of discovery, competing against rival scientists to be the first to solve the greatest unsolved mystery of the universe—dark matter—and win the ultimate prize; the Nobel.

Emma Franklin, a PhD candidate at Harvard, developed software for detecting particle reactions using a quantum computer. To the amazement and excitement of the scientific community, her work revealed two possible bumps in the energy curve that were not predicted by any established theory.

At MIT, Lawrence created a model that predicted the scattering processes of a dark matter supersymmetry particle. Though his early work was disparaged, he improved his theory and found that it predicted the data Emma had discovered. Their professional collaboration deepened into a personal relationship, but when critical data was stolen, Emma found evidence that incriminated Lawrence. Though she withheld the impeaching material from the authorities, she felt she could no longer trust him.

Despite their troubled partnership, and notwithstanding the complexities of nature, Lawrence and Emma persevered against the egos, jealousy, and envy of rivals, on their exhilarating quest to find the ‘Holy Grail’ of physics

I thought all was lost—now I have a second chance.

With a profound sense of relief, Andrew Lawrence slide his tablet into his shoulder holster and walked briskly along the Boston sidewalk. His past academic failures and egregious family circumstances were behind him. He was ready for a fresh start.

Tall, slender, and dark-haired, he listened to the clicking and clacking of shuffling shoes on the pavement as students jostled alongside him. The hint of autumn from the cool morning air brought a frenzy of activity to the sprawling campuses of both MIT and Harvard which nurtured a flourishing rivalry among their ambitious students. He could feel the undercurrent of tension for the start of the fall term.

By the time he crossed Longfellow Bridge, his adrenaline was pumping. He noticed several eight-man sculls already rowing down the Charles River, their school colors plainly visible. Squinting his eyes against the glare, he could make out the MIT and Harvard boats vying for the lead, stroke by stroke.

Striding across the rambling campus, his lips concealed a secret smile as he contemplated a revolutionary solution to a problem he had been daydreaming about. When he swung around a corner, he ran smack-dab into a young woman. Her armload of books, papers, and assorted technology flew into the air and scattered across the walkway.

“Sor . . . sorry.”

“You should be,” the woman said, her face screwed into a tight scowl. “Your head was in the clouds.”

Lawrence opened his mouth, but before he could speak, she pointed down and said, “See what you’ve done?”

She stooped and frantically tried to corral her absconding belongings.

“Let me help,” said Lawrence, grasping some loose papers about to blow away.

Spying her tablet on the grass, she exclaimed, “Oh no! All my work.”

Carefully, she picked up the device and turned it on, tapping her fingers impatiently until the screen lit up. She heaved a sigh and looked Lawrence directly in the eyes. “You’re lucky. Sooo . . . lucky.”

Lawrence mumbled another apology and helped her pick up the last few books.

As she struggled to reorganize her treasures, Lawrence brushed a strand of hair away from his eyes and for the first time cast an appraising glance at the young woman.

She was attractive.

It wasn’t that she was a striking beauty—though her smooth white skin, olive green eyes, and classic profile complemented the hazelnut hair that cascaded over her shoulders. Nor was her carriage especially eye-catching, though she displayed an appealing youthful vitality. No, what seemed most appealing was her confident determined poise, as if she possessed a special hidden talent.

“You really should use a backpack.”

“The lining ripped,” she retorted.

Seeing the logos on her tablet’s screen, Lawrence asked, “Harvard? Math?”

“I can tell by your tone that you’re MIT,” she said, her eyes flashing.

Lawrence grinned, “Physics.” As an afterthought, he asked, “What are you doing on this campus?”

“Well, Mr. Physics, that’s none of your concern.”

Something in the way she said it, caused him to laugh.

They faced each other in a stand-off for a long moment—saying nothing.

Then the young woman heaved a sigh, gathered her possessions to her chest, and brushed past him.

Lawrence watched her figure disappear into the crowd.

Damn. I didn’t get her name.

As he turned to leave, something shiny on the ground caught his eye. It was a flash drive.

Picking it up, he spun around and called, “Wait!”

But she was gone.

He looked at the memory stick, thinking . . .

I’ll have to crack her password, if I’m going to see her again.

The Billionaire’s Catch

Their daughters bring them together, but they are worlds apart.

Billionaire attorney, Jared Matthews, is the single father of a young daughter. He is focused on his work and raising his daughter who is dealing with the death of her mother. He has little time or interest in dating until he meets Rachel, the mother of his daughter’s best friend.

Rachel Carmichael is a single mom working two jobs and barely making ends meet, but she’s determined to do whatever it takes to keep her daughter in a pricey private school. Attraction flares when Rachel meets Jared. Falling for him would be easy, but the two come from completely different worlds.

Can two matchmaking daughters help their parents see that love is the only thing that really matters?

Excerpt

Jared stood up and wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. He reached out to shake Rachel’s hand. “It was nice to meet you,” he said again, staring into her eyes. He held on to her hand, feeling a pull that was a strange occurrence for him. She giggled and it prompted him to release his hold.

The two women walked them to the door and watched as Jared got each girl buckled in her seat. He turned to wave. “I’ll have her back for dinner,” he called as he made his way around to the driver’s side.

Rachel waved first at Molly and Melissa and then gave a quick wave to Jared.

The girls chattered nonstop in the backseat while Jared drove. He smiled when he heard some of the funny things they were saying. Jared kept thinking about Molly’s mom. When a moment of silence broke in the backseat, he asked Molly a couple of questions. “Where does your dad work at?” he boldly asked.

“I don’t have a dad,” Molly answered.

Jared made eye contact with the little girl through the rearview mirror.

“I’m sorry, Molly. I didn’t realize that.”

“It’s okay. Mommy said he’s been dead before I was born.”

Jared steadied his gaze back on the road.

She’s single.

He never fell for women quickly. He made a point not to. A corner of his heart still belonged to his dear wife. He shook off the crazy feelings so he could concentrate on driving, but he’d definitely felt a little ping when she’d looked at him. It wasn’t every day a woman did that to him. He was kind of turned on by her sexy well-defined arms and legs. And he couldn’t help but notice her tight little butt in those slim fitting yoga pants she was wearing. He lightly licked his lips and raked a hand through his hair.

Yeah. This definitely changes things.

The Writer's View: M.S. Fazan

I’ve worked for editorial websites and video game companies for quite some time, and they often require very tight turnaround times for writing deadlines. Because of this, I’ve become more-or-less accustomed to writing anywhere, at any time, and have worked on de-ritualizing my writing space to be able to be more productive in the in-between spaces of the day.

That being said, the bulk of Entromancy was written in my apartment in Berkeley, California, which is in many ways one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I live a few blocks from the University of California, and the inspiration for most of Entromancy’s locations comes directly out of my upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s a spectacular, and action-packed, place to be, but also provides for a thoughtful environment for writing, simply because of all of the different kinds of activities available that can help spark creativity.

The two pictures you see here are from both sides of my writing space: an outside view of San Francisco from the Berkeley hills, and the inside view of my imagination which is fueled by fun things like music.

Thanks so much for having me stop by!

2076 is not a good year to be a special agent. A quarter of the world's power runs on ceridium, a newly discovered element that has had the unintended consequence of spawning a new race of people, and several forms of magic that were once thought to have been forgotten. Eskander Aradowsi is an agent of NIGHT, a paramilitary force created to contain and control this new perceived threat, but he soon learns that not all within his organization is as it seems. A botched mission turns out to be the least of his troubles, when he unearths a plot that threatens the uneasy truce between the aurics and humans of San Francisco, and centers on a form of magic that toys with the very fabric of the universe: Entromancy.

Read an excerpt:

I fought to stay calm. I could hear my pulse pounding in my ears, matching the drumming in my temple, and I kept forgetting to breathe. I hedged, knowing that I could leave, taking the auric with me for questioning, but I wouldn’t have time to evacuate the people upstairs. I wasn’t familiar with being unsure of my next course of action, and I didn’t care for the feeling.

I had neither the time to give the defuse protocol another try nor the skillset to hack into the device and do it the hard way. I synced the timer with my digitab and saw the countdown appear in my lenses. Pocketing the digitab, I released my knee from the auric’s throat and grabbed him by the collar.

“What’s the code?” I snarled at him.

“What?” he said thickly. I could see the blood staining his white teeth.

“Don’t play stupid with me,” I said, shaking him. “What’s the code?”

“The hell, man? What code?”

I could see that he had no idea what I was talking about. I glanced back at the bomb and up at the time display. 21:27:24, three minutes and thirty-six seconds.

The auric craned his neck to follow my gaze, then looked at me. I could see understanding register in his eyes.

“We’re dead?” he queried.

I nodded absently, reaching for another ceridium capsule. Prying off a glove with my teeth, I reached out towards the device.

The auric’s hand shot up and grabbed weakly at my wrist. “You’re going to kill us, man!” he protested.

“Probably!” I looked back towards a side entrance next to the counter. “Can you open that?”

He hesitated, then nodded slightly.

“Do it,” I said. He got up slowly and trotted over to the door.

Not a rabbit.

James stood beneath his most lucrative snare, hands on his hips.

It appeared that … he tilted his head and narrowed his eyes just to make sure. Yep. Unless he was mistaken, instead of catching a small woodland creature, his snare had trapped a human.

James watched as long, silky hair swayed back and forth in midair. A slender neck led to a narrow back that tapered into an even narrower waist.

A real, flesh-and-blood woman.

Prior to that I lived in my car and all my writing was done at various public libraries in Seattle. I live alone so there is no distraction from roommates, family members or pets. I did make a few acquaintances, and they’d pop by every so often to see if I’m still alive and kicking, but basically I’m alone most of the time. As this is transitional housing, they frown on people who put up too many decorations. I’ve chosen not to put any up at all since I don’t plan to be here that long anyway. Typically, there’d be Asian and African masks on the walls as well as models of Asian and African musical instruments.

I live in Solid Ground Housing. It’s basically a community of buildings in North Seattle that’s been set aside for the poor, chronically homeless, and those with mental illness. Located in Magnuson Park, we have access to wetlands, playfield areas, kite and dog parks, and Lake Washington. I enjoy living here but regret that it’s only transitory. The place is pretty conducive to writing, though. In the six months I’ve been here I’ve written several short stories (“Lamp Black,” “Ol’ Tubby,” “Red Sand,” “The Vented Chamber” and “Post-Concert Blues”), three novellas (“Obey The Darkness,” “Crystal Mine” and “The Soucouyant”), released one audiobook (“Commoner the Vagabond”), and am getting ready to publish a new collection of stories called “Obey The Darkness: Horror Stories.”

No one ever "re-dies" in Heaven; unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to singer Amy Winehouse. Her death, an unprecedented event in Heaven's history, has thrown a once docile world into unfortunate chaos. Because of the new uneasy alliance between angels and citizens, a freshly-arrived detective in the rock & roll town has been tasked with investigating the prime suspects, the members of the 27 Club - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. To make matters worse, a powerful angel from one of the upper levels of Heaven will soon arrive to make her ten-year inspection, a task that fills the other angels with dread since she has the power to banish anyone of them to the underworld. So, with time running out, the PI and his newly acquired sidekick, both aided by rock legends such as Eddie Cochran, Mama Cass, Kurt Cobain, Karen Carpenter and others, must quickly uncover the mystery that threatens not only to close Heaven’s doors forever, but promises to send a ripple effect through the entire universe that can rip it apart.

Plants of varying shapes and sizes sprouted everywhere, some just knee high, some as tall as mango trees. Rows of narrow pipes across the ceiling misted the foliage every minute. A few customers were sampling some of the edible flowers while others were reading manuals or informational tags about the unusual plants. Towards the back, the good PI spotted an employee who was busy pulling off the dead leaves from several botanical specimens. The clerk, he noticed, was very colorful with her psychedelic bamboo slippers, purplish pants, flowery blue and white tunic, rows of bangles on each wrist, several beaded chains around her neck, and a pink strip of cloth enmeshed in her long brown hair. As Gregory neared her, he could hear her humming along to the music playing over the virtual speakers high up in the corners of the center.

“Excuse me,” he introduced himself, “I was told Janis Joplin works back here.”

The employee turned and glanced at him. “You found her, babe.”

“Hi, Janis,” the PI introduced himself. “I’m Gregory Angelicus. And…”

“Oh, Lord,” she moaned, flinging the twigs in her hand down. “Another angel. What’d I do now?”

“Oh, no,” he stated quickly, “I’m not an angel. I just wanted to ask you a few questions.”

“About what?” she asked, eyeing the intruder with suspicion through her circular yellow sunglasses.

Gregory looked around momentarily. “Is there some place we can talk?”

“Sure,” she answered, crossing her arms. “You’re standing in it.”

Welcome to Mayhem, Minnesota, where the cats wear sweaters, the local priest dispenses dating advice, and you can find your fortune in the bottom of a pie pan.

When her family’s pub is threatened with foreclosure, Hennessy O’Halloran, along with her three sisters, is determined to raise enough money to keep it out of the hands of the L.A. real-estate developer trying to raze it and replace it with a—god forbid!—multiplex theater.

Bryan Truitt always gets what he wants. And what he wants is the sweet corner property on Mayhem’s Main Street where O’Halloran’s Pub sits. But his “quick business” turns into more than he bargains for when he meets the feisty Hennessy. Next thing he knows, he’s betting her he can outlast Mayhem’s punishing winter in time to make the pub his—or he’ll gift it to her for free.

Hennessy knows better than to flirt with the enemy. But suddenly Bryan’s not sure which he wants more…the property or the woman who owns it.

Hennessy O’Halloran is looking progressively more fidgety as I close the distance between us.

“I–I…I mean, considering our…you know…our arrangement…” she stammers.

“Which arrangement?” I ask innocently.

“You know…our wager…”

“Oh, that arrangement. Yes, you’d think things might be awkward between us. But they’re really not, are they?” I muse. She doesn’t reply—nor does she make a move to thwart my approach. “Quite the opposite, actually. It’s the damnedest thing, Hennessy. I just can’t seem to stop thinking about…” I let the sentence hang between us until, finally, she clearly can’t take it anymore.

“About what? What can’t you stop thinking about?” she asks quietly.

We’re only a foot apart now, and she has to look up to see my face. That means I get to look down into her perfect, milky complexion. I’m so close that I could actually count the freckles dotting the bridge of her nose. I wonder if she has them anywhere else…

Before I can stop myself, I lower my head close to hers, and for a split second, I know we both think I’m going to kiss her. But at the final moment, my mouth veers to her left ear. I’m sure she can feel the warmth of my breath as I whisper the single word.

“You.”

Except it doesn’t sound like a word. It’s an exhalation—a sigh—and it floats from my mouth to her ear and heats the space between us for the brief moment before I turn and leave her looking after me as I walk back down the hall, self-satisfied smile on my face.

Oh, God.

I am in so much trouble here.

Win a $10 GC: The Mirror by Karla Brandenburg

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

It’s always a challenge writing a character who wasn’t likeable in a previous book. I had to discover Sandra’s backstory, what made her lash out in Epitaph, and I was writing it during my busiest time of year at the day job (which turned out to be the best thing that could have happened). I had to set the book aside until work settled down, and when I revisited it, I realized I’d gone the wrong direction. I started over, but one of the hardest things was forgetting all the things I’d started with the first time in order to make it a better story.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the oddest things! Sometimes it’s a beautiful setting, a unique house, an act of kindness by a stranger. I wrote Heart for Rent after walking through a French Market (farmer’s market).

Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work?

I grew up reading Stephen King and Victoria Holt, two very different authors. They inspired me, but today, I’d probably say Kristan Higgins and Jill Shalvis inspire me. I love the three-dimensional characters they draw, the way they create conflict and just when you think the characters have it all figured out, they throw in another monkey wrench!

What do your plans for future projects include?

I am continuing with the Epitaph series – I have two (maybe three) siblings more to write, and I’m excited to get to their stories. Beyond that, I expect to take another trip to Hoffman Grove and the Northwest Suburbs series, but one book at a time...

Do you ever get writer’s Block? Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I sometimes hit a road block, and it can be very distracting, but like driving, a detour will get you back on the right road. I keep writing. Something. Anything. And eventually I’ll go back to that piece of road I had to walk around and then it makes a lot more sense.

Have you ever had one character you wanted to go one way with but after the book was done the character was totally different?

YES! Sandra in THE MIRROR is a perfect example. I knew her basic personality, but her motivations took a left turn on me. She was a victim, but I didn’t want her to have a victim mentality. I started out making her a hero to someone else, but when the story was over, she was a tough cookie who was her own hero.

When Sandra Meyer's violent ex-boyfriend returns to sleepy Edgarville, Illinois, she turns to the man who stood up to Nick Benedetto back in high school. If brawny Garth Benson will pose as her boyfriend on social media, maybe Nick will leave her alone. Sandra adores Garth, but she doesn't want any more ties to Edgarville. Now finished with a decade of dedicated service as her mother's caregiver, Sandra is planning her exit from this one-stoplight town.

Garth is firmly rooted in Edgarville with the family monument business and a trophy shop that will need a "mom" to his "pop." Garth has wanted Sandra ever since he slugged Nick more than ten years ago. Her secrets run deep, as do the strengths that he admires within her, but whenever he tries to move their casual flirtations from talk to dating, she backs away.

Small town life has strangled Sandra as effectively as Nick tried to when they were in high school. Garth might be the one man who can protect her from Nick, but what he expects in return is too much. On top of that, her deceased father’s unexpected appearance in the mirror of her new home exposes long-held secrets that will change Sandra's view of her family and hometown forever.

When the last tie holding her to Edgarville is cut, Sandra runs as fast as she can, but the world outside her small-town community isn’t all she expects.

“Why do you care what happens to me?” Sandra asked.

Not the question he was expecting. How honest should he be? He considered the safe answer but figured the truth would be best. “Why does the warmth of the sun make you feel good? What makes the moon and stars so fascinating? And yet some people don’t even notice a clear night sky.” He leaned over the table. “I notice you, Sandra. The person you are. You might try to hide from everyone, might think they only see the girl you’re rumored to be, but I happen to know I’m not the only person who sees the real you.”

“Garth…”

He shook his head. “No, you asked. And in case you decide to be embarrassed about kissing me, in case you think that was a mistake,” he paused to decide if continuing down this path would be a mistake. He’d gone this far. “We joke around, tease each other, but truth is often hidden behind a joke. What I feel for you, Sandra, is no joke. I’d like to think I understand you, which means I’m not going to betray your trust in me by taking advantage of you. But if you want me,” he spread his arms. “I’m all yours.”

“Garth,” she said again. Her pupils were dilated, and her eyes reflected the heat he knew was buried deep inside, but she didn’t make a move. “You mean a lot to me,” she said softly. “I’d hate to lose that.”

Real estate mogul Eli Ward needs to keep a low profile on his new project. He’s expecting a fight from the somewhat eclectic folks currently living there. What he doesn’t expect is for that fight to be led by Brooke Worthington, the woman who rocked his world one unforgettable night. The one woman who doesn’t know who he is, which is a good thing. She just sees him as a regular guy. It’s refreshing.

Graphic designer and part-time bartender Brooke Worthington refuses to follow her family’s plan for her. She’s too busy building her artistic career. She doesn’t have time for relationships, either, especially with the super hot Eli, because she has to save the building she lives in with people she thinks of as her real family from some greedy real estate billionaire.

These two have secrets and chemistry that is nothing short of explosive.

Brooke cleared her throat for attention. “Okay, people. As exciting as our new addition is, we’re still in the middle of a meeting here.”

“We can deal with the garden later. I want to hear more about Eli.”

An older woman eyed him appraisingly from the sofa. The gray-haired man next to her blew a loud raspberry, but she continued, undeterred.

“I don’t see a ring on your finger. Tell me, young man, do you have a girlfriend?”

“Or a boyfriend?” asked David, the arm around Chris tightening.

“I’m straight,” Eli assured him, then directed his gaze at Brooke. “And single.”

She ignored him and started in on the bean dip.

“Oh, what a pity.” The older woman tsked her disapproval. “A handsome young man like you should have someone to come home to.”

“Get a dog,” the man next to her suggested. “Less expensive than a woman, and they never talk back.”

“Or cook dinner,” said the woman next to him, who Eli had figured out must be his wife. “Or do your laundry. Or…”

“See what I mean about talking back?” Her husband pushed his wire-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose.

“Dog’s definitely the way to go.”

“About the garden…” Brooke tried again.

“Is it true, what Chris said?” Charise piped up. “Do you and Eli really know each other?”

“Were you two an item?” David asked, jumping on the way-too-personal bandwagon.

“Despite what you all seem to think, this is not Melrose Place.”

Brooke adopted a Wonder Woman power pose, hands balled into fists on her hips and feet planted firmly apart. “And I am not sharing the details of my private life at a tenants’ meeting.”

The Chocolatier’s Ghost is an enchanting sequel to Cindy Lynn Speer’s bestselling romantic mystery, The Chocolatier’s Wife.

Enjoy an Excerpt from The Chocolatier's Wife:

Time was, in the kingdom of Berengeny, that no one picked their spouses. No one courted—not officially, at any rate—and no one married in a moment’s foolish passion. It was the charge of the town Wise Woman, who would fill her spell bowl with clear, pure water; a little salt; and the essence of roses, and rosemary, and sage. Next, she would prick the finger of the newborn child and let his or her blood drip into the potion. If a face showed in the waters, then it was known that the best possible mate (they never said true love, for that was the stuff of foolish fancy) had been born, and the Wise Woman could then tell where the future spouse lived, and arrangements were made.

For the parents of William of the House of Almsley, this process would turn out to be less than pleasant.

The first year that the baby William’s finger was pricked and nothing showed, the Wise Woman said, “Fear not, a wife is often younger than the husband.”

The second, third, and even fifth year she said much the same.

But you see, since the spell was meant to choose the best match—not the true love—of the heart the blood in the bowl belonged to, this did not mean, as years passed, that the boy was special. It meant that he would be impossible to live with.

On his seventh birthday, it seemed everyone had quite forgotten all about visiting the Wise Woman until William, who knew this of long habit to be a major part of his day--along with cake, a new toy, and a new set of clothes--tugged on his mother’s skirt and asked when they were going. She stared at him a long moment, tea cup in hand, before sighing and calling for the carriage. She didn’t even bother to change into formal clothes this time, and the Wise Woman seemed surprised to see them at all. “Well, we might as well try while you’re here,” she said, her voice obviously doubtful.

William obediently held out the ring finger on his left hand and watched as the blood dripped into the bowl. “She has dark brown eyes,” William observed, “and some hair already.” He shrugged, and looked at the two women. “I suppose she’ll do. I’m just glad ‘tis over, and that I can go on with my life.”

“For you, perhaps,” his mother said, thinking of what she would now have to accomplish.

“Do not fret, mother, I shall write a letter to the little girl. Not that she can read it, anyway.” He petted his mother’s arm. He was a sweet boy, but he was always charging forward, never worrying about feelings.

The Wise Woman rolled out an elegantly painted silk map of the kingdom and all its regions, his mother smoothed the fabric across the table, and then the Wise Woman dipped a brass weight into the bowl. Henriette, William’s mother, placed her hands on William’s shoulders as the Wise Woman held the weight, suspended, over the map.

Henriette held her breath, waiting to see where it would land. Andrew, her younger son, had his intended living just down the street, which was quite convenient. At least they knew what they were getting into immediately.

The plumb-bob made huge circles around the map, spinning and spinning as the Wise Woman recited the words over and over. It stopped, stiffly pointing toward the North.

“Tarnia? Not possible, nor even probable. You must try again!”

For once, William’s mother wasn’t being stubbornly demanding. Tarnia, a place of cruel and wild magic, was the last place from whence one would wish a bride. They did not have Wise Women there, for anyone could perform spells. The Hags of the North ate their dead and sent the harsh winter wind to ravage the crops of the people of the South. Five hundred years ago, the North and the South had fought a bitter war over a cause no one could quite remember, only that it had been a brutal thing, and that many had died, and it led to the South losing most of its magic. Though the war was long over and the two supposedly united again, memory lingered. “I have cast it twice.” The Wise Woman chewed her lower lip, but therewas naught else she could do.

“Not Tarnia, please?” Henriette, usually a rather fierce and cold woman, begged.

“I am afraid so.” The Wise Woman began cleaning up; her shoulders set a little lower. “I am sorry.”

William, staring out the window at the children playing outside, couldn’t care less. What did it matter where anyone was from? She was a baby, and babies didn’t cause that much trouble.

“Only you, William,” his mother said, shaking her head. “Why can you not do anything normal?”

This was to be the tenor of most of their conversations throughout their lives.

“Sit down and make yourself comfortable. Do you prefer regular or decaf or how about organic green tea?”

“Tea sounds good to me. Green tea carries health benefits, too.”

“I won’t be long.” She chuckled at his cute medical reference. A fresh brewed tea took a few minutes in the new system she’d purchased at a specialty shop. A bag of oatmeal cookies made with all-natural ingredients came in handy, and she reached for them along with the cups. When the tea was done, she put a few cookies on the tray and carried it to the living room. The last thing she’d expected was to play hostess, but she found it fun.

“Here you go.” She placed it on the coffee table.

Rob patted the spot next to him. “It’s time to relax. You’ve had a tiring day.” He took a few sips of tea and set the mug on a coaster.

His doting words reminded her of the typical thing a doctor would say, but his caring nature appealed to her. With Rob sitting so close, her hands shook. They exchanged playful glances. Rob stood and went to the sliding glass doors. “You have a great view from here.”

She got up and moved toward him. Her chest tightened with each step. As she approached him and admired his tall stature, it dawned on her he could be a candidate for People’s sexiest man alive. Control yourself.

“I’m happy here,” she admitted. “I love it when the morning light shines on the water and it mimics crystal.”

Rob moved closer to her. His gaze, fixed on her, sent shivers from head to toe. Afraid of what might happen next, she turned away. An electric energy surged between them. Rob reached for her and pulled her firmly up against his chest.

“You’re an amazing woman, Savannah.”

His lips met hers, and he cradled her head in his hands as if she was a precious jewel. It all happened so quickly, she didn’t have time to react. The warmth of his touch sent waves of heat down to her stomach and in between her legs as the world stood still. When Rob’s hands moved across her back, it took her to a level of arousal she never expected. She found herself spellbound by the feel of his rock-hard body. All of the emotions she’d kept inside emerged when Rob held her tight. When they finally parted, she stood frozen in shock with her heart pounding and her ears ringing.

His expression made him appear as if he’d broken the law, with his mouth open and eyes practically popping out of his head. He quickly took a step aside. “I don’t know what to say. I-I’m, so sorry for my rude behavior.”

“You weren’t rude. I didn’t stop you.”

“I don’t know what got into me. You’re an amazing woman, and I find you terribly attractive.” He stared deep into her eyes.

“Thank you.” She turned away, still uneasy, but flattered.

“I’d like to take you on a real date. Would that be possible? Is it in contradiction of ethics to date someone you’re working with?”

“There’s no rule for dating a guest on the show. I make my own rules.” Surprised by her words, she held her arms close to her body and rubbed them.

“That’s what I like about you. You’re not afraid of taking a risk. I could tell from the moment I met you, you were a strong, independent woman.”

Unanswered questions twirled around in her head. Making a date with a doctor and one with a family, no less, is crazy. She was sure she should resist, but her body told her something completely different.
