3 Word Wednesday 10/27/10

Sorry I'm late today. I'm on our anniversary vacation with my wonderful husband and plumb forgot it was Wednesday. :-) But... late or not, here's the latest entry... I need a title....anyone?

To play along with 3 Word Wednesday, or find other participants, just click the button.

Today's words are: fragile, rampant, tremor For earlier entries in this story.

Julianne sat the heavy bag on the floor of the foyer and took a deep breath. For better or worse...a tremor ran up her spine...she was here for the weekend. The first order of business was to find some place to sleep. Leaving the bag, she climbed the wide staircase that lead to the second floor.

Dust motes played in the light streaming from the open doors on either side of the hallway, and Julianne thanked whatever god was listening that it was a sunny day. She wasn't sure she could have gone through with her plan had the day been dark and dreary.

Surprisingly, the rooms were in pretty good shape for having been unused for so long. A testimony to the strength of the structure of the house, she supposed. She walked the length of the hall, glancing in at all the open doors, before she came to the one door that was closed.

The brass knob turned easily enough and, when the door swung open, Julianne gasped.

She had dreamed about this room as a child and, in that dream, it was a place of wonder and safety. In her waking memory, she had never been to this house-- never even knew about her aunt until the letter had come from the lawyer. Here, though, now was proof that at some point she had known both.

Everything was exactly the same as her dream...the wallpaper of blue flowers, faded now by time; the window seat looking over the garden. In her dream, the garden was a sea of color. Now it was overgrown, but color still peeked from behind the rampant growth of weeds. For the first time since entering the house, Julianne felt at peace and at home. This was where she would stay for the weekend.

Thankful, and surprised, the bed coverings weren't as fragile as she had feared, Julianne stripped them from the bed and carried them downstairs to the laundry room. She retrieved the supplies she had brought with her and returned to the house, determined to do battle against the ages before doing battle with anything supernatural.

Today's words are: effect, immense, shimmer

Julianne turned from her packing as her roommate came into the room. The retort that had risen to her lips in preparation for yet another round of rational arguments against her decision died on her lips as she saw the armload of items Rachel held.

"If you are determined to go ahead with this harebrained scheme, then at least be as prepared as you can be. I still don't believe there's anything supernatural at that house...more likely it's an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato'," she quoted, "but, on the off chance I might be wrong, I would feel better if you had these. They were my mother's." The word was uttered with the customary twist of the lips that recollection of her mother's occupation always caused.

Julianne lay the immense silver cross, rosary, scapular, and holy water next to the more mundane items in the bag. For an instant, the cross seemed to shimmer, but Julianne laughed inwardly at her own imagination and closed the case with a click that sounded oddly final to her ears. She turned back to her friend and said, in a voice that shook despite her best efforts, "I'll see you Monday, then."

The casual words did not have the effect Julianne was going for. Tears welled in Rachel's eyes as she responded, "You have no idea how much I hope so." Without another word, she turned and left the room.

Tuesday's Meme Fun

Welcome to The Queen's Meme #57.

Shamelessly stolen from The Queen's Meme site.

We're talking THREES. Answer these questions all having to do with the number 3. I predict this meme will take about 3 minutes to do.
Of course I could be wrong.
It's been known to happen.
And watch out! Question #3 is a doozy.

3. Where were you 3 hours ago?
It's 8:58 pm as I'm writing this; three hours ago I was locking the door of the library after our last patron had left :-)

3. Is there anything pink within 3 feet of you?I am already in my jammies and there's pink on them; plus there's a plastic cup that's pink that is sitting on the table between my recliner and my husbands.

3. Name the 3 scariest places in the world. 1. My brain (because I just this minute realized all the questions are question 3); 2. California (because no matter what they say, I'm sure if I go to visit, it will fall off into the ocean; 3. my child's bedroom (nuff said)

3. Name the 3 loveliest sights you've seen lately. My husband's face when he surprised me for lunch; a flower from our yard my husband brought me yesterday; the clean kitchen I came home to tonight

3. Name the top 3 Bands in the year you were born. The top three according to The Oldies Guide are: Maybelline by Chuck Berry; We're Gonna Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets; Tutti Frutti by Little Richard.

3. Walk to your front door. Go outside and get in your car. Drive 3 miles East. Describe 3 things you saw on your way. Okay.. it's late.. we're going to pretend I did this. I passed some lovely ponds, the post office, and my friend's RV park :-)

3. I, Queen Mimi, have sentenced you to a 3-day diet of your most sinful cravings. What will you be partaking? Reading, chocolate, wine, fresh bread

3. Go back to question #3. Change the first word to "travel" and let me know if you survived. I'll hold a room for you in the dungeon in the meantime. I survived the trip to my brain, but I don't recommend it for the faint-of-heart; I'll let you know when I finally make it to California; and even I'M not brave enough to venture into A's bedroom without the National Guard standing by.

3. If you are the 3rd person to do this meme and sign the Mr. Linky as #3 you win a prize! The prize is you don't have to do this meme. Oops. **Don't you know you should always read all the instructions/questions FIRST??** Unfortunately, I'm not going to be number three, because I'm not going to sign it til in the morning and the number three spot is already taken :-)

I'm Off Work and Get to.... Work

Today is the first day of my three day weekend. In case you don't know, I work at the library full-time, but since we are open on Saturdays and two nights a week, it's not a 9-5/M-F kinda job. We are closed on Sunday, but that just means that Mondays are really really busy. I work one night a week (Tuesday) and every other Saturday. The Saturday I work, I'm off Sunday and then back to work on Monday. So...the following weekend, I have F/S/S off. It's nice, but by Thursday before the 3DW, I'm last night, I came home, and vegged. Did a little bloghopping and visiting commenters from yesterday, played a little Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook (my friend hit over 500,000.... I love a challenge, and did little else. So....

This morning I have to get on the stick and finish the LASR/WC pages before Marianne hits me with aforesaid stick, so... toodles!!

For the daily "How Alike Are Judy and Marianne" Quiz:

You Are Radiant

You have a natural glow from with in. You seem to always sparkle.

You are joyful and delighted with the world. You have found your bliss.

You remain bright and sunny even when the outlook isn't so good.

You believe the world is a glorious place, and you're going to celebrate it as much as you can.

Yeah, even though we got the same results, you can see by her response just how accurate it is for her! Me, pretty close.

As illustration, in 1996 my family and I lived near Raleigh when Hurricane Fran came in, leaving us without power for over a week. At one point, my oldest daughter was griping about the heat, or the lack of hot water, or something, and I said to this 16-year-old that we could just think of it as if we were living back in the days of Little House on the Prairie. She put her hands on her hips, looked at me for a long moment, and said, "Mom, do you have to always be so cheerful about everything?"

Well...yeah... pretty much :-)

Thursday Thirteen: Librarian's Work

In addition to my writing, LASR/WC, Goddess Fish, family, and home-- I'm also a librarian. Librarians don't just check out books. Here's 13 things I normally do during a regular day.

1. Check out books.

2. Check in books.

3. Explain to patrons that, no, they can not check out more books when they owe over $10 in late fees.

4. Explain to patrons that, yes, they did indeed bring the books back, but the books were three months late and, even at just ten cents a day for each book they checked out, when they had out fifty books and kept them out an additional ninety days, fines tend to add up.

5. Teach patrons how to use the card catalog (which now exists on a computer and not in a drawer)

6. Explain to patrons that they will not find our non-fiction books in the fiction section.

7. Help patrons set their account up so they can place things on hold and renew books from their home.

8. Check in DVDs, put them on the cart to put on the shelves, then check them back out to other patrons.

9. Explain to patrons about the fabulous things we offer in our 24-7 Library, including basic skills, audio book downloads, test preparation, and foreign language learning.

10. Call patrons and remind them that the book they had us borrow for them is in the library and they can come pick it up.

11. Register new patrons who have never had library cards before and explain the rules.

12. Tell patrons who have had library cards before and who are still in our statewide system that they need to bring back the twenty books they still have out from the last library they had a card at before I can issue them a new card.

13. Gladly announce when it's closing time. :-)

Seriously, I love my job at the library. Today (I'm writing this on Wednesday night for Thursday Thirteen) we had a man come in who had recently been laid off his job. He was sixty and was going back to college to try to learn a new skill. He didn't have a library card, so we fixed him up and showed him how he could go onto the computer to study and brush up on his reading skills because he had tested out at the tech school as reading on a second grade level. It's being able to help people like this that make my job so rewarding.

And, on the "just when you think you've seen everything" side, we had six books turned in today that were due in 2004 :-) Better late than never.

What's the longest you've ever kept a library book?

The daily "How Much Are Judy and Marianne Alike" poll:

3WW: 10/13

Click on the picture to find other participants in 3 Word Wednesday.

Today's words are: absolve, hiss, ridicule

Julianne darted to the door, but even as fast as she moved, by the time she reached the opening, she could see nothing in front of her. No robed figure, no furniture, no light at all. Except for the foot or so she could see from the light behind her, there was total darkness ahead of her.

Hissing in frustration, Julianne turned. There were no matches laying unattended on any of the dusty surfaces and, of course, she had left her flashlight in the car. Who expected to need a flashlight in the afternoon? Even as gloomy an afternoon as this one should have afforded enough light through windows to be able to see. Absolving herself of the guilt of not being prepared, Julianne made a mental note that the next time she returned to the house, she would have everything she needed and more.

Her friends may ridicule her, but her aunt had left her this house and she was determined to find out why--disappearing robed figures, rooms without windows, or any other thing the went bump in the night or not.

The daily "How Much Alike are Judy and Marianne Quiz":

You Are Not Stressed

You may have some stress in your life, but you're coping quite well.

You are in a great position, and better off than almost everyone else in the world.

Today's words are: hint, lust, sheen

A continuation from last week's 3WW.

Julianne pressed her ear against the door, but not a hint of a noise came through. Gritting her teeth, she turned the knob and pushed the door open, cursing the lust for knowledge that led her to this conundrum. Apart from a heaviness in the air, the room was empty. A sheen of dust covered the surfaces...dust that hadn't been disturbed for a long while.

She shifted her gaze and a shadow shifted across the mirror. Whirling to look behind her, she caught sight of a robed figure disappearing silently through a door.

Happy Birthday to You!

Today is the birthday of a very special person in our The Long and the Short of It family... our "PDF Dispenser" and "Keeper of the Database." Michele has been with us from very nearly the beginning of our endeavor and was the first person we "hired": her first title was AABH (All Around Big Help).

Michele always keeps us laughing and, even though I've never had the chance to meet her in person (the wonders of Internet), I count her as a dear, dear friend. I would love everyone to stop by her blog today and wish her a "Happy Birthday."

Friday Fun

It's a conundrum: when the economy is bad, people use the library more-- they stop buying books and start borrowing; instead of Netflix or Red Box, they check out DVDs; they come in and use the computer to look for jobs. Libraries are busier these days than ever. The conundrum comes in because our budgets are being slashed right and left. So... what to do? Here's what one library did:

How about you? Do you utilize the library? Do you support the library?
