I'm tired

I had to get up early this morning to take my Marine son to Warner Robins to catch a shuttle to the Atlanta Airport. He is flying out this morning (as a matter of fact, he should be on his way now) to LAX and then to Hawaii tonight. It's a good tour for him, because he loves the beach and the tropical life style. Guess I'll just have to go and visit him! lol

I've put my contemporary WIP on the back burner to cook a little more and I've gotten out my historical. It's nice to be back with Duncan and Lizzie. I've missed them.

Dreams are Strange Things

I had a very weird dream last night. I was reading a friend's blog and she had created a story using the people in our critique group. I don't remember all the details, but the part I do remember is "Judy was carrying hemp... the rope, not the weed. The sides had been burned off so the rope would be smoother to carry." Where do these things come from???

I've had dreams before that I would swear upon first waking up would make a great story. Then I start working with the idea and go.... "huh?" I know there are writers who get their ideas from dreams, but I don't think I'm one of them. I tend to see or read about a situation and go "what if?" Or...I have a story starter or a prompt of some kind and I can write my fingers off (most of the time). How do you get your ideas? From dreams? From your life? From what you read?

Speaking of prompts... it's Friday. Gotta get to my critique group and find out what our fearless leader has for us this week.

Happy Writing.

I Should Be Writing

... but I have a headache and having problems with my sinuses and (whine, whine, whine). So... instead, I took a test. I think I'll have Fiona take this test and see what happens with her. (See... this post IS writing related, after all!)

What an Interesting Idea

I got this from Marianne's blog. It's a Johari window. I thought it would be interesting to do and see how others view me. If you have the time, I would like to have you fill out my window...and maybe even make one of your own.

Maybe There's Something to This

...and, if not, it might be interesting to use for a character. Birthday Calculator. There's also a link to a numerology site where you plug in your birth name (or the birth name of your character).

Don't know about all the information, but here's a sample that DOES seem to fit:

A Soul Urge number of 7 means:
With a number 7 Soul Urge you are very fond of reading, and retreating to periods of being alone and away from the disruptions of the outer world. You like to dream and develop you idealistic understandings, to study and analyze, to gain knowledge and wisdom. You may be too laid back and withdrawn to really succeed in the business world, and you will be much more comfortable in circumstances that are tolerant of your reserve, your analytical approach, and your desire to use your mind rather than your physical being.

You are very timid around people that you don't know very well, so much so at times that casual conversation and social situations can be strained. You tend to repress your emotions to the extend that some people have a good bit of difficult understanding you. You tend to be very selective with friends and you don't easily adapt to new environments or to new people very quickly.

The negative traits of the 7 include becoming too much the introvert and isolated from others.

Something to Read

I finished Kay Hooper's After Caroline this morning and went scurrying to her website. I found a good article for writers. It didn't really tell me anything new, but it did reinforce what I already knew in my heart. Writing is not for wimps... not if you want to be a successful writer. And, I do.

Agatha Christie said something in her autobiography that I need to print up and post all over my house and, especially, by my computer. A real writer writes even when she doesn't feel like it, when she doesn't even particularly like what she is writing. She was working on a book under contract at the time and just did not like the book, didn't like the characters, and didn't want to be doing what she was doing any more. BUT, she was a professional writer, so she wrote anyway. That's the mindset I need to get to.

I was amazed at how prolific Kay Hooper is. I've read several of her books here and there, but since she had her first book published in 1981, she has had 76 books published (that's not counting the ones that have been reissued). I'm having trouble writing one book in a year and she's had published 3.04 a year....and I'm sure she didn't do that by sitting around sighing, "oh, I just don't FEEL like writing today" or "I don't have time to write." I think I want to be Kay Hooper when I grow up! :-)

A Conspiracy

My kids and my sister conspired against me. I'm not upset about it though... they gave me a lovely surprise.

Backstory: My son is in the Marines. He's been in California at MOS school. He was able to come home for Christmas, but said he wouldn't be able to get leave after MOS before heading out to his first duty post ('s a tough job, but somebody's got to do it, right?). Anyway, I didn't hear from him for several days after school was out, so emailed him and asked him what was up. His response: as soon as they got to Hawaii, they had been put right to work repairing the network (he's a network administrator) and just hadn't had time to email me. Okay... fast forward a week.

I get a call about 9:30 Saturday night. It's my son... just calling to tell me he loved me. Now, y'all have to know... that's not my son. He just wouldn't do that out of the blue. So... I tell my DH... "something's wrong. I don't know what it is, but something's wrong. I'm going to call him back." About that time, there was a knock on the door. DH goes and comes back into the hall... "I don't have my keys" (the deadbolt was already locked). I ask (as I grab MY keys), "Well, who is it?"
He hollers back from the bedroom... "I think it's DD". Well, I'm fussing, 'cause if she needs to knock to get in, that means she's lost her house key AND her car keys. I go to the door... and (yep, you guessed it)... my Marine son was standing there grinning like a Chesire cat.

Surprises like that are nice. The kids did good.

New Friends

DH and I drove to Florida over the weekend and met a charming couple. They live in Florida half the year and their home is on Prince Edward Island the other half. They own a B&B up there in "Anne of Green Gables"-land.

We had a wonderful visit with them. I was thinking on the drive home how rare it is to meet "kindred spirits" least, we've found it so as a married couple. There are times when one of us will meet someone we could feel connected with, but the other half of the couple... well, let's just suffice it to say that there doesn't seem to be a lot in common. It was nice to find a couple that we felt at ease with and enjoyed.

People we meet, people we see, situations we hear about... everything merges together to form what we draw from when we write. I'm always excited about new places to go, because I know that somewhere out there, I will find something that will spark a new idea or a new way of doing things. I don't know that I will ever run out of something to write about.
