Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Books I've Recommended and Why

I have some standard books that I absolutely love and wish that everyone could read them and enjoy them the same way I do... and sometimes it works out/sometimes it doesn't.

One series that I absolutely love is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, and I'm fixing to reread the series to get ready for the release next year of the newest book in the series Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone. What's not to love? It has romance, history, time travel.... well, my friend Marianne Arkins cannot stand it... she's tried several times and can't make it past the first few chapter. :::shrugging::: Go figure.

Another series I often recommend is Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series. I fell in love with this character when I read the first book in the series The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie: Winner of the Crimewriters’ Association Debut Dagger Award, the Agatha Award, the Macavity Award, the Arthur Ellis Award, the Dilys Award, the Barry Award, and the Spotted Owl Award.

Meet eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison.

It is the summer of 1950-and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely skewered by its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”

What book is your favorite to recommend?

  1. LOL... it's true. I'm one of the few who doesn't like "Outlander". I have a friend who doesn't either. We had a funny conversation about it, where she said something about the book and I said I could read past the first few chapters and SHE said, "Oh, thank goodness, it's not just me!" So there are at least two of us. :-) ... totally the minority though.

I love cozy mysteries, though, so may give the other book/series a try!

  3. I tried outlander and didn't get that far, either. It's got to be one of those if you like it, you really like it, but if you don't then you really don't books. Shrugs. I'm game to try the other one though. :-)

  5. Watched the first two seasons of the Outlander series had enough, not that interested in trying to change history through time travel. http://pmprescott.blogspot.com/

  6. I'm pretty sure my sister in law recommended the Flavia De Luce books to me a while back, too; I really should go check those out. I've never tried the Outlander books, mostly because they don't seem quite like my cup of tea, but the folks who enjoy them seem to really enjoy them.

  9. I vaguely remember reading Outlander when it first came out...but I've tried to revisit it a few times and couldn't get into it. So I understand why you like it and why Marianne just can't sink into the book ;)
