JP’s pistol tastes like bourbon.

Sergeant JP Grimm didn’t pull the trigger. Now his Marine brothers are dead. All victims of a child in a suicide vest…a child that resembled Sgt. Grimm’s very own. But how are you supposed to take a child’s life? How can you kill someone that looks just like your own son?

Those same hazel eyes he saw in his scope continue to haunt him long after he left the desert death lands as he tries to reconnect with his son, Adin. JP battles another war at home against PTSD and the worthless, dejected thoughts that he is the reason his friends are dead. His wife, Lisa, struggles to let her stubborn husband work it out on his own terms. She does all she can to give him space, support, and strength—but her love can only go so far.

As the world shows signs of impending doom from a weakening magnetic field and flaring sun, JP, too, shows signs of his own impending doom. After pushing everyone away, JP must face his nightmares to restore his relationship with his son, save his marriage, and save himself before the modern world burns out in a fiery, electromagnetic disaster.

A few minutes went by, and he broke the soft whimpering silence with a kiss to her forehead. “I need you. More now than ever—I need you.” His voice cracked. “I’m broken. I can feel it like a poison inside of me. There’s so much rage and anger and pain that’s burning a hole into my head.”

She leaned back to look into his eyes. “Jay. I’m here. I’m here with you. Babe, you don’t have to do this on your own. Whatever this is—we can fight it together. We can get through it together.” She kissed his cheek, and then his shivering lips. “But I need you to let me in. Damn it, Jay. You stubborn, stubborn man. I need you to talk to me, to tell me what you feel, to tell me how to help you.” Her tone reverberated inside of him. “Because I don’t know how to. Baby, I don’t know how to heal you if you won’t tell me what’s hurting you.”

The sickness was making its way to the surface, and he felt ill. Not sure if it was the whiskey or the poison that he buried inside of him, he began to sweat and tingle. His body was hard and tense, and then he shuttered like a sick dog.

She rubbed at his neck, his arms loosely around her, their hips still together, but he was in another place. He was away, distant, lost in the far reaches of his razor-wired mind. He waded through the blood and bodies buried in his memories. The persecution on his face, the pain of the past—it unfolded before her, crushing her. How badly she wanted to take that nightmare away from him was paralyzing.

“It was me,” he said in a daze. “It was meee. My fault. I did it. I hesitated. I didn’t pull the goddamn trigger when I should have!” He spoke like someone else was reading his story. Like it was some judge reading his verdict, his sentence. From behind the hard bars of his own prison, he confessed. “I didn’t shoot the kid. I couldn’t. I should’ve fucking shot him! Now they’re dead. I got them killed. I killed them! I fucking killed Joey!”
