Sister Mary Francis watched from the sidelines as the girls swept past her on the track. Jessie, a tall blonde, was in the lead.
She'd come a long way since coming to live at the convent school four years prior. Sister Mary Francis remembered the first time Jessie had come into class - her little chin held high and a look of bravado on her face. However, the hands clasped so tightly around her books that the knuckles were white suggested to Sister Mary Francis that her manner was all for show.
