The view outside my window

If you looked out my windows, you see a few buildings, quiet streets, and trees. When I write, what I enjoy are the sounds. Wind blowing branches and leaves, the voices of children playing, birds singing. I love it. Sunshine, clouds, pouring rain—I love whatever the day brings.

But actually my window is very large. It encompasses a lot of adventures, such as sailing and snorkeling all over the South Pacific and Caribbean, and hiking in mountains in western U.S. and strolling ocean beaches. Locally, my window shows Crosby Park—an old growth forest 2 blocks from where I live, Cedar Lake—a spring fed lake I swim in all summer, and the St. Croix River—a clean river also for swimming—three of my favorite places in the world. I love water, swimming—and even sailing is just another way to get somewhere else to swim. I’ve swam with sharks, whale sharks, turtles and many dazzling fish.

All of these locations have adventure, fun, and the beauty of nature. If you go back in time with my window, to the age of 6, I was running wild in meadows, streams, ponds, and small forests, always looking for wild animals. A love of nature and animals embedded itself in my consciousness at an early age. Later that expanded to studying hummingbirds in Itasca State Park in Minnesota, and humpback whales in Boston Bay on the 144’ squared-rigged barquentine, Regina Maris.

Concurrently with all this adventure, my window included looking deeply inside at consciousness—anxiety over a family move at age 7, and bullying in high school, shifted my attention inward. That journey overtook everything else in my life, informed all adventures, and led to the culminating effort of SMILE MORE STRESS LESS. It’s really a book about expanding consciousness, and covers the breadth of human emotions, relationships, activities, and challenges we face. I love this book, because its contents have brought me clarity in life and clarity in action—which is intelligence—and ended the nonstop underlying anxiety and stress patterns I have been creating all my life.

If I had a dream, it’s world peace, world harmony with nature and wildlife, and fulfilled human beings everywhere—free of violence and especially for women, free of the domination of men.

This is not said in some kind of naïve hopefulness. Change your consciousness, and you can change the world. That’s always been my goal.

The thought process is regarded as a sign of human intelligence, yet our thoughts often sabotage what we do and are unaware, negative, and create stress. We’re running an old program in our brain’s neural net. Worse, we’re addicted to the repetitive thought process. It feels good, safe, right. It feels like us. Who we are. Our thoughts create feelings and emotions which, even if we don’t always like them, are a known process that continually reinforces itself in the brain.

Minor adjustments are not enough to alter the brain’s stress process. The brain’s neural net needs a system overhaul, a complete update and reboot. We’re going to take thought off its pedestal and get real with it.

Too often we feel that to attain awareness means taking a very serious, “adult” approach to life, like a monk sitting in a cave for a decade. But it can be a playful adventure with childlike wonder.

Our INTENT in this process is the WHY of what we’re doing. Our intent is to consciously break up our habitual neural pattern—mechanical, negative thoughts—by informing and teaching the brain to change. In essence, to rewire itself. If the brain understands what we are trying to do, and why, it will listen. It has no choice. You can be the master of wiring your neural net to a positive state.
