I teach at Navajo Technical University and live in the community – unsurprisingly, the view outside my window, whether at home or work is that of the Navajo Nation. It is the pride of semantics for those who belong to the Navajo Nation.
As a native American tribe, the Navajo Nation is an indigenous tribe that has survived everything thrown at it. Occupying portions of northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico in the United States. This is the largest land area retained by an indigenous tribe in the United States, with a population of 173,667 as of 2010.
By area, the Navajo Nation is larger than ten U.S. states – West Virginia, Maryland, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island – and is less than one percent shy of being equal to the combined area of the last five. As a very progressive community, the community has been repressed, lacks amenities for a community In the United States. These are the views by my window, these are the things I see on a day to day basis.
If you have never seen a place where there is unlimited potential but very limited capabilities to meet the set goals, that place is the Navajo Nation or used to be the Navajo nation. The founding of Navajo Technical University has helped to raise the bar to an extent but there is still so much that can be done.
There is another view from outside my window - it is that of a beautiful landscape and hardworking people, working out their own fates and becoming the master of it. The good people of the Navajo Nation are resilient in every sense of the word.
If you ever feel down around me, if you are confused and you don't know the next step to take, I would not ask you to listen to a motivational speaker or do yoga. I will just take you on a short trip through the Navajo Nation and when we are back, you will be inspired..
While some writers have fancy window views while writing, the Navajo Nation is my window view. It symbolizes everything I am writing for.
This view spurs me to work hard, to do my best. On the Navajo Nation, I have chosen my path.
