Belle woke shivering.
She was still on the couch, dressed in yesterday’s work clothes, and she’d fallen asleep without a blanket on. Pale sunlight danced at the corners of her drawn shades and she peeled open her eyes, glancing at the clock on the wall. Ten minutes past seven. Saturday morning.
And don’t forget, Ben’s having an affair!
Belle squeezed her eyes shut. She’d had a fair amount to drink when she’d gotten home the night before. She hazily recalled dialling Ben’s number multiple times, leaving frustrated messages on his voicemail, all of which went unreturned, before succumbing to a vodka-induced stupor on the couch.
She pressed her head into the cushions. It was pounding, as though someone had assaulted her with a bat. In no particular order, she needed coffee, aspirin and a shower. She dragged herself off the couch and headed into the kitchen, catching sight of herself in the hall mirror on the way. She looked a dreadful mess. Her hair was matted and tangled, still half woven into knotty braids. Her eyes were red and puffy from a thousand tears.
On any other day, she was enchantingly pretty. Her hair was long, the colour of wheat, and she always wore it in two French braids. She had a light dusting of freckles on her cheeks, big brown eyes, and her body was slender and lithe from a childhood spent in ballet studios. She was graceful, ethereal and lovely to look at. Her manner was gentle, her disposition kind; all the qualities Ben adored. Why then had he strayed into the arms of another woman?
