Telepathy creates as many problems as it solves, as most of the members of the secret organization x0 would admit. When new member Lola discovers another group of telepaths with a completely different approach, those problems multiply at the speed of thought.

Soon, Lola’s family and friends are in danger. Lucky for her, she’s not your average budding psychic. Each person with whom she is close has a special gift of their own. That’s good, because it’s going to take every power they possess to keep this other group from succeeding with their plan to eradicate x0.

Lola though about it. “That’s really all you want?”

Warren nodded. “Don’t worry. I don’t want you to seek them out or to engage with them. I fully suspect they’d best you if you did, to be honest, and then I’d be in worse shape than I was without you. All I need from you is a little gauze around my brain while I tend to my business. Once I get things straightened out, you and Maurice and those you care about will probably be free to go, if we can reach an amicable agreement.”

Lola searched deeper for any hint that she was being lied to, and found none.

“I’m particularly good at mental walls,” she said. “If this is all you were after, why didn’t you make it clear sooner?”

“You were so hostile when I met with you last night,” he said. “It seemed wise to put you in a more cooperative frame of mind. Will I have your assistance?”

“Mine, yes. I can’t speak for Maurice.”

“He’s already said he’ll abide by your decision.”

“Very well. When do you want me to start?”

“Now. And Lola, I understand that you know that I have no immediate way of telling whether you are doing as promised or not. You are right, I can’t feel the wall. Make no mistake that if you lie to me, or even if you merely fail at your task, events will make it quite obvious to me what has happened. I promise you that such a lapse will cost you dearly, and I will be more specific if you need me to be. Do we have an understanding?”

“We do,” she said. “I don’t need to hear your threats, and in fact I don’t want to hear them. Rather, I’m going to offer you a sign of good faith. Not only can I surround you with gauze, as you put it, but I’m pretty sure that I’ll know when any one of your telepaths try to seek you out. I won’t engage, but I will give you that information if it would be useful.”

“Of course it would. Why are you being helpful?”

She answered honestly. “Because while I don’t like you, I also don’t like them, and at least you and I have an understanding.”

“Well said.”

He seemed pleased.

“I do like a logical woman. I understand that proximity is useful, so you will join me in my quarters for the night.”

He waited. She said nothing.

“Good. You understand that you needn’t be concerned about any physical expectations on my part. I want your full concentration on your work. You have the—” He looked at his elaborate gold watch—“it looks like you have the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift.” He turned to Xuha. “Go notify the old man that he’s on duty at 7 a.m. sharp.”

His look softened a bit.

“Oh, and let her husband know she is safe for the night.”

He gave Lola a creaky smile.

“A gesture of goodwill back.”

About the Author: Sherrie grew up in Western Kansas thinking that there was no place in the universe more fascinating than outer space. After her mother vetoed astronaut as a career ambition, she went on to study journalism and physics in hopes of becoming a science writer.

She published her first science fiction short story long ago, and then waited a lot of tables while she looked for inspiration for the next story. When it finally came, it declared to her that it had to be whole book, nothing less. One night, while digesting this disturbing piece of news, she drank way too many shots of ouzo with her boyfriend. She woke up thirty-one years later demanding to know what was going on.

The boyfriend, who she had apparently long since married, asked her to calm down and explained that in a fit of practicality she had gone back to school and gotten a degree in geophysics and had spent the last 28 years interpreting seismic data in the oil industry. The good news, according to Mr. Cronin, was that she had found it at least mildly entertaining and ridiculously well-paying The bad news was that the two of them had still managed to spend almost all of the money.

Apparently she was now Mrs. Cronin, and the further good news was that they had produced three wonderful children whom they loved dearly, even though to be honest that is where a lot of the money had gone. Even better news was that Mr. Cronin turned out to be a warm-hearted, encouraging sort who was happy to see her awake and ready to write. "It's about time," were his exact words.

Sherrie Cronin discovered that over the ensuing decades Sally Ride had already managed to become the first woman in space and apparently had done a fine job of it. No one, however, had written the book that had been in Sherrie's head for decades. The only problem was, the book informed her sternly that it had now grown into a six book collection. Sherrie decided that she better start writing it before it got any longer. She's been wide awake ever since, and writing away.
