The Writer's View

I love being surrounded by books. When I searched for my first house, one of my requirements was to have a fourth bedroom that I could use as an office. My plan was to have a desk on one wall and a chair for reading. Another full wall would contain book cases that I’d fill with my vast collection. Sadly, that didn’t happen and now my writing space is my dining room table.

It’s a challenge to juggle my books on the one book case I have. Last night my son gave me a Harry Potter book to put back on the shelf but I had to move so many books out of the way before he could reach the spot where I keep the HP books. If you look closely at the third shelf and front of the fourth shelf, you’ll see the many books on my to-be-read pile. And on the second shelf, I proudly display Untangle My Heart among the bulk of my Danielle Steel books.

While limited in space, I was able to carve out half a shelf for my writing craft books. When I need guidance, I have easy access to the many resources I’ve sought out for advice over the years.

For me, the hardest challenge is that the kitchen is only steps away and it’s very easy to snack when I’ve hit a roadblock in my writing. Stress eating and not-so-ideal conditions aside, I generally manage to find time to do something writing-related one to three hours a day. The early morning hours are my most productive time, when my family is asleep. It becomes increasingly difficult in the evening or the weekends when my kids are in the adjoining living room working on the computer or playing a game. During this time, I’m interrupted regularly and often have to either slip on my headphones and listen to white noise (usually ocean sounds) or go upstairs where I have a make-shift desk in my bedroom for my day job. I still haven’t given up the hope for my dream office, but it will have to wait until my oldest moves out (not for quite a number of years).

Thanks for stopping by today. Where do you like to read? Do you have a favorite chair or place in the house where you can escape with a favorite book?

  2. I am amazed that you can write in the center of the house like that. Sometimes I feel like I can't THINK let alone write in my house, in my office, with the door CLOSED when my family is up and about. Your bookshelf looks GREAT. Congratulations on your release! I loved reading Untangle My Heart!

  7. Hi Rita. FOUR bookcases. Nice. I could easily fill four. Sadly, I've had to move some of my books to the basement. I hate that because it's not finished and is very damp. I keep telling myself to stop buying print books but can't seem to stop myself :-) Thanks for commenting.

  8. Hi Jane. While for me, ebooks are more practical, I LOVE the smell of a book. Give me an entire bookstore and I could move in! Thanks for sharing.

  9. I have so many ebooks in different venues it's kind of embarrassing: 2900+ on kindle; 400+ on Nook; more in my Smashwords and ARe libraries... it's a sickness lol. I also have an entire wall of my living room devoted to both paperbacks and hardbacks, in addition to several industrial sized storage tubs filled with books. What's truly amazing is I've actually read the majority of them, many series twice! I even have Untangle My Heart on my kindle!
