Mnemonics

My husband mentioned this morning that the moon was waxing. I have never been able to remember the difference between waxing and waning... but Ashley said her teacher said, "Wax on, Wane off."

After I stopped giggling, I remembered my history teacher, Mr. Brooks, telling us that sometimes mnemonics don't always work as well as they should. He had a student who wrote on a test, "In fourteen hundred and ninety three, Columbus sailed the deep blue sea" instead of the correct "In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Thanks, Jen!!!

What is your favorite memory devise?

  1. I thought it was "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue"! Oh, horrors! All this time, I was saying an inaccurate mnemonic!

  3. I remember Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally - paranthases, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtration - though I haven't used it in years!

I prefer songs to remember things, like this song in the tune of Turkey in the Straw: Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Columbus is the capital of Ohio...
