Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all my friends!

Just wanted to remind everyone that voting starts today for the LASR Best Romance of 2007and continues throughout the month. You can only vote once in each category, but you can tell your friends and readers about it through your blogs, loops, word of mouth... hey, pull strangers in off the street and encourage them to go vote for the book/story you consider the best.

There are four categories and four chances to vote: Best Print Long, Best EBook Long, Best Print Short, and Best Ebook Short. There are some great authors represented and I'm proud of all of them.

I hope everyone was safe last night. We went to bed fairly early, but our youngest woke us up about 11:50. Seems one of her friends had run off into the ditch not far from our house, so we went out and pulled him free as the New Year was coming in. Everyone was safe... so that's the most important thing.

I wanted to share with you some New Years' superstitions. Enjoy.

1. Eat black-eyed peas, hog jowls, and collard greens to guarantee prosperity through the year. I never knew why you should eat only pork New Year's Day, but discovered it's because poultry scratches backward, cows stand still, but a pig roots forward. Who knew?

2. You should not wash clothes on New Year's Day, lest a member of the family be "washed away" the coming year. (Heck.. any excuse to get out of doing laundry!)

3. It's bad luck to let a fire go out on New Year's Eve. Ours stayed on, because I didn't want to be cold when I woke up :-)

4. If the wind blows from the south, there will be fine weather and prosperous times in the year ahead. If it comes from the north, it will be a year of bad weather. The wind blowing from the east brings famine and calamities. If the wind blows from the west, the year will witness plentiful supplies of milk and fish but will also see the death of a very important person. If there's no wind at all, a joyful and prosperous year may be expected by all. Hmmm... ours is blowing NNW right now.

5. Avoid breaking things on that first day lest wreckage be part of your year. Also, avoid crying on the first day of the year lest that activity set the tone for the next twelve months. This probably goes along with what I've heard all my life... whatever you do on New Year's Day, you'll do all year. Let's see.. I've worked on LASR, I've blogged, I've cooked. I've chatted with friends. Yep, I can live with that.

6. Nothing -- absolutely nothing, not even garbage -- is to leave the house on the first day of the year. OOPS.. too late. We've done this.

What about you? Are there any other superstitions you know of?

  1. I know that if it rains on Chinese New Year, the year will be a very lucky year - but I don't know about the international new year.

    Happy New Year, anyways :)
