Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Board and Card Games I Enjoy

Today's question is what board and card game I enjoy. And the answer is... way too many to list. lol Click here to see everyone else's answers and to play along with us.

I love love love games, but my husband is not a fan (comes from being an only child with parents who didn't play games.... so sad).

My mama was a single mom and with a one income household, money was a bit on the tight side. We had everything we needed, not always things we wanted. But, if there was a bit of extra money, Mama told me that she would rather put it toward a board game we could enjoy for a long time, rather than something like a movie that would be enjoyable for the moment.

My sister, Mama, and I played cards a lot...spades, queens, rummy, gin, not to mention some games which have migrated to specialty games in this day and time...crazy eights (UNO), spite and malice (SkipBo), and Shanghai Rummy (Phase 10). Also... standard board games: Scrabble, Monopoly, Sorry, Yahtzee, backgammon, etc.

In college, my roommate introduced me to Rook (which reminds me that I've not played it in a bit... I need to buy a deck and introduce it to my sister).

In the last few years, I've learned a new game from friends down at our beach place... Jokers. So much fun...especially with the group of friends we have down at the coast. A bit reminiscent of Sorry/Parcheesi).

As you can probably tell... games play a big part in my life. After Mama had her stroke (affected her mobility and her speech but not her mind) we played an unending game of rummy ... she was normally ahead...lol. And, my sister and I play cards or some other game most evenings.

And... my children are the same way with their families...love that traditions carry on. :-)

  2. These are such great stories! My family invested in all sorts of board and card games, too. They are such a fun way to pass a few hours.

  3. Boy, we grew up the same way, single working mom, a practical one and Board games can be used over and over :) I'm mostly an online girl of Words With Friends anymore, but I do like spades.

  4. We always had game days or nights at our house. Your post brings back so many memories. I forgot about Crazy Eights. I learned backgammon when I was older. My parents loved cribbage. Thanks for sharing, Judy.

I've never played Yahtzee or backgammon, but wish I had because they're a more sustainable part of culture than video or online games.
