The view inside my writing space is constantly changing, I don’t actually have one place where I write. I am on the road a lot (as a public speaker and consultant) so my writing space is often the place I am working, and the ideas come from my interactions with the beautiful humans I have the pleasure of working with. Many of the concepts or mindful strategies often hit me while I am actual running a workshop or a training session. I often say to my wife “I feel like I am a comic working on my bit, as I test out different ways of teaching techniques and how those techniques work with the audience”. A question from the audience will often spark a conversation, which usually leads me to poorly draw (see attached photo) of a stick figure with arrows and circles trying to demonstrate where we can experience emotions in our body or mind, and an idea will pop in about how to express this teaching in a better way. It has become a normal practice for me to make a note about an idea or concept for a book while I am on stage, or in a training room or classroom. The view in my writing space can be a school hallway (on my way from one class room to another), my car as I am speaking into my phone making an audio note, a hospital amphitheatre, or my couch when I have a moment to build off of those audio and written notes. If I sit down and close my eyes and think of my view of my writing room the most memorable experiences during this every changing writing space was when my artist Emily was using my youngest son, Beau, as the model for Andy Gets Angry, and we were discussing the overall story and concept for Andy, I asked Beau (then 6 years old) “where would you experience anger if this happened to you and how would that make you feel” which then led to me change some of the book. The idea for Andy Gets Angry came to me while I was working with a primary class during one of my mindfulness talks for students. While discussing the emotion of anger, I had the idea for the book with illustrations showing how all humans experience anger, with this idea that children could use a simple technique to help them respond to their emotions in a healthier way.

Children can develop the ability to respond to their emotions in a healthy way through the practice of mindfulness. Andy Gets Angry is a great introduction for children to learn a fun and simple breath technique to respond to their emotions. The beautifully hand-painted illustrations provide the perfect landscape to tell the story of Andy and his journey in learning the wonderful skill of mindfulness. Share the book with your loved ones, and help us all plant the seed to be present!
