The Vaelinel Trilogy continues with this absorbing sequel to Silevethiel! Alone and hunted by the Drulaack, Irewen takes advantage of her only option for survival. Pushing her concerns aside, she lets the dead keep her.

But her refuge doesn't last long. Driven out of their hosts by Laegon, a handful Drulaack have returned to the Spirit World. No longer having the protection of the dead, Irewen is forced to return to Vaelinel.

Finally reunited with her companions, the burdens placed on them are taking their toll. Thoughts of suicide and mistrust plague the company. Slowly unravelling, they must conquer their personal battles before standing against the evil threatening the land.

For the Corrupter thirsts for revenge. And he'll stop at nothing to satisfy his hunger.

The clanging of swords hung onto the damp evening air, a chilling promise of death. Despite fighting for his life, Elthad couldn’t help but marvel at the significance of the battle. Never before had two Drulaack dueled one another. Until the victor finally landed the killing blow, the spirits’ reaction to be bested by one of their own would remain a mystery.

Ducking slightly, Elthad swerved to the left. A fresh wave of euphoria coursed through his body when Vel’s sword sliced through nothing but air. Elthad pivoted to face his officer and countered with something Vel had yet to figure out.

Magic.

Elthad had felt the power surge within him the moment he’d drawn his sword. At first, he wasn’t quite sure what it was. But coming from an era when magic didn’t belong solely to the elves, the spirit he hosted immediately recognized the power. It reacted almost like a child being awarded his favorite dessert.

The spirit’s giddiness was contagious. Elthad couldn’t help but feel excitement, not only for his new power, but also for the spirit. It’d been given the opportunity to use the magic it had been deprived of for thousands of years. Although it would never again know the freedom of life, in some small way, it could now once again feel what it was like to be alive.

Smiling inwardly, Elthad released the magic. A tidal wave of force erupted from both of his hands. It slammed into Vel with such unimaginable power, it tore the sword from the officer’s hand. The breath knocked from his lungs, Vel clutched his chest and stumbled a few paces before collapsing on the ground.

It was all Elthad could do to keep the spirit inside him at bay. Invigorated by experiencing the full extent of its power, it grew wild. It wanted more. It craved the freedom to cast spell after spell and unleash all of its magic into the world.

It wanted revenge.

The power within Elthad intensified. It moved through him, feeding off his life before once again collecting in the palms of his hands. A glowing white aura formed around his fingers and expanded until both of his forearms were encased by the magic.

With no idea what this spell would be, or who or what it would be directed toward, Elthad fought against the spirit’s will. Its shrieks of protest cut through his entire body. The pain forced him to his knees. Trickles of sweat poured down his face. The spirit pushed against him, drawing more of his life force into the energy already gathered at his hands. His arms rose involuntarily. Screaming, he fought to keep them at his sides. Drawing on what power he could, he tried to erect barriers between himself and the spirit, blocking it from the magic.

His efforts didn’t work.
