Wisdom of the Ages

About a year after that incident with my daughter, she came to me complaining that she was bored. Then she began to cry. “I don’t know what I am supposed to be doing with my life,” she said. I laughed and told her that she was too young to be worrying about life; it would reveal itself to her in time. I reminded her of what she had told me many months before. She looked at me, a bit frustrated, and teary-eyed. “I know I’m supposed to be living my life as Kelci, but what does my life mean Mummy? What am I supposed to be doing with my life?”

I looked at my teary-eyed daughter, stumped. If one of my peers asked me this question, I could talk for hours about self-expression and purpose. It was interesting that I could also have this conversation with an eight-year-old. While I wanted her to fully express herself, I also wanted her to enjoy her childhood.

But it dawned on me that perhaps for her, enjoying her childhood meant finding her passion now. Already she feels like she should be doing more with her life. I need to help her find out what it is and allow her to do it. Then her entire life will be one of purpose and self-expression.

Shortly after that conversation, I came across a website that asked the question “What does love mean to you and how do you express it?” Thinking aloud, I asked the question to myself. Kelci was sitting next to me and volunteered her own response: “I think love is a kind of force that I have to release to give happiness to the people that I care for.”

I turned to her in amazement. I wrote it down. I was blown away. Man, I wish I was this insightful at eight! Or was I? Was this only my daughter or was this an example of how eight-year-olds think? Do we know how our children view the world? Do we ever ask them the burning questions? Do we think they’re too naïve?

Although I did not believe that Kelci’s response was completely accurate, I was nonetheless amazed at the depth of her thought process. Eventually, she will learn that happiness is not a tangible gift that you give to someone, but rather, an emotion that a person chooses to feel. You can release love and a person may choose to feel happiness as a result of your love (or not). But I agree that love is indeed a force that we need to release from our hearts to everyone and everything.

I have learned that children are so much more perceptive than we think. And they provide an interesting perspective on many of life’s challenges. We should take heed. I have no doubt that if we begin the spiritual dialogue at an early age, with the right direction our children will be headed for an incredible future.

Life is short…the younger ones need to be heard. Let’s start the conversation.
