Today's words are: effect, immense, shimmer

Julianne turned from her packing as her roommate came into the room. The retort that had risen to her lips in preparation for yet another round of rational arguments against her decision died on her lips as she saw the armload of items Rachel held.

"If you are determined to go ahead with this harebrained scheme, then at least be as prepared as you can be. I still don't believe there's anything supernatural at that house...more likely it's an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato'," she quoted, "but, on the off chance I might be wrong, I would feel better if you had these. They were my mother's." The word was uttered with the customary twist of the lips that recollection of her mother's occupation always caused.

Julianne lay the immense silver cross, rosary, scapular, and holy water next to the more mundane items in the bag. For an instant, the cross seemed to shimmer, but Julianne laughed inwardly at her own imagination and closed the case with a click that sounded oddly final to her ears. She turned back to her friend and said, in a voice that shook despite her best efforts, "I'll see you Monday, then."

The casual words did not have the effect Julianne was going for. Tears welled in Rachel's eyes as she responded, "You have no idea how much I hope so." Without another word, she turned and left the room.

  2. i totally enjoyed this :) you packed a lot of emotion and history in the few paragraphs.

I was puzzled why a shoulder blade would be part of the presumably anti-vampire arsenal though... you probably meant "scapulaR"? :)

I'm interested in seeing how this story evolves, it's quite fascinating and always well written. But... sorry to be picky, I didn't see "immense" in there? Am I being blind?
