What's In a Name?

What a busy weekend! No, we didn't work. I spent hours in P-A-R-T-Y mode. I visited a kazillion and a half new blogs and there are still two kazillion left I haven't visited. Also, I'm thinking people can still sign up here and sign up… so who knows how many people will be partying?

As a fun thing to do, I thought I would post some things about my name. I stole this idea from Jane.

My name is Judy, a diminutive of Judith. My full name is Judith Ann. My college roommate (Hi, Joy!) calls me that sometimes… and my mom (still) when I'm in trouble.

Judy was first used as a name in the 18th century, and I share the name with several famous ladies: Judy Garland, Judy Holliday, Dame Judi Dench, and Judy Collins. When I was in high school, I spelled my name "Judi." Not because of Judi Dench, but because my favorite English teacher (and the woman who encouraged me to write) spelled HER name that way. (Hi, Mrs. Davis!)

It is originally a Hebrew name and this site says it means "Jewess." This site gives the meaning as "Praise or a Jewish Woman."

According to Wedding Vendors, the popularity of Judy reached its zenith in the 1940s and 1950s…. which is about right! I remember there were three Judy's in my class in elementary school!

Check your name out and let me hear from you.

  1. I always get depressed research my name. It always reminds me it's a dimunitive of James.

No, I am not a boy!!

I blame my mother, of course.

  3. Speaking of Judy Garland, There is an exciting and popular new group on Yahoo called THE JUDY GARLAND EXPERIENCE. The group features hours of ultra rare and unreleased downloadable audio files by Judy, great photo's, lively discussion, and more! The membership is the most ecletic gathering of Garland fans anywhere and includes Judy's family members, friends, people who worked with her and saw her perform, directors and producers of Garland related projects, authors of Judy biographies, historians, and more! The only thing missing is you. Please stop by our little Judyville, and check it out, you may never want to leave!

  4. my real name is so dull, I dont even bother looking it up. Nothing like having a saint with your name and then the church taking the saint thing away

  5. Depends on where you look. My name is either "bitter" or "blessed by God" -- a derivitive of Mary.

Guess it's a little like me - depends on the day!

  6. Every place I have ever looked my name up on has said that it means "pale one" or "white woman" or "white wave". It's like the baby name books know I live in Minnesota and that I'm tanning challenged!

  7. Hmm..."of a noble, exalted nature." That's kind of a lot to live up to. A different site said "truth." I kind of like that better, even though as a writer I probably play with it more than a little!
