We were scheduled to work today, but the job was cancelled. We were not heartbroken, I promise you! We decided to play hooky and go to.... are you ready for this... the Fire Ant Festival. It's been around for 12 years, but I'd not heard of it until a few years ago when Bob mentioned it. We were talking about small town festivals and I thought he was using the term as a generic, fun term for all small town festivals. I mean... really.... who's going to celebrate the existence of the fire ant? Ashburn, Georgia, is.

Here's Bob with the Ashburn mascot:

There was some wonderful food vendors. I thought about taking a picture of our lunch, but not until after I'd eaten half of it. I was hungry! lol

Southeastern Snake Rescue had an exhibit and discussion. Jason Clark showed several snakes, both venomous and non. He was very entertaining and interesting.

Musical entertainment was a special treat and ran the gamut...dancing, singing and a Mexican band that was sensational.

The music wasn't limited to the staged area, either. Forest Flute Creations had a booth set up. Not only were CDs for sale, but we were treated to Indian Flute music. Click on his link to hear for yourself. One day I'll figure out how to get music on here.

And, that was our day. Mama gave me a loquat tree for my birthday and I need to get out and plant it. Bob bought me some vegetable plants (a couple of tomato plants and several pepper plants, along with some herbs) and we got those in the ground yesterday. Right now, though, we are chilling out. After all, we have to rest up for The National Grits Festival and The Worm Grunting Festival. Unfortunately, both of them are the same day... decisions, decisions.

Ye gods. The only way I'd want to celebrate fire ants is if I'd managed to kill them all. *g*

  2. I'm so jealous of your garden...we got another cold snap and I won't be able to plant until at least May if I want it to live.

And why are they celebrating those mean little suckers? I remember once in FL after we had a lot of rain waiding in the flooded creek...and a fire ant hill that had gotten flooded was floating on the water right into me and my legs. Those ungrateful fire ants climbed up on me and started biting me...can you believe it?

  3. You Southerners sure do know how to party! I have to agree with Renee -- why are they celebrating the existence of fire ants? Ugh.

I'm not talking about gardening. No way, no how. Not fair. My tomato plants have been started, from seed, indoors. They're about three inches high. By the time I can plant them AFTER MEMORIAL DAY, they should be plenty big.

Oh. Guess I talked about gardening after all.

You'll be harvesting by the time mine go in the ground.

    I hate New Hampshire...
