Win a $25 Gift Card: The Writer's View by E.M. Thomas

For me, a writer’s workspace needs to be one thing above all else: as minimally distracting as possible. For better or worse, I am not one of those writers that can sit in a noisy Starbucks or any other bustling setting and be productive. Tried it, just doesn’t work for me. I need a silent spot with hardly any visual stimulation. Sounds exciting, I know.

So what’s the view inside my writing space? At its core, it’s remote and windowless, populated by just a chair, an ottoman, and a pillow for my laptop. A TV hangs tantalizingly on the wall, begging to be turned on; most times I resist, but it’s a constant struggle. Likewise, I have a love/hate relationship with my internet connection, which is my No. 1 time-thief when trying to work on my novels. While it’s utterly invaluable for being able to quickly look up relevant historical facts (in the case of my Ancient Greek historical fiction, for instance) or other bits and pieces relevant to the story, it’s so easily a rabbit hole down which hours can be lost; when you’re trying to balance writing with a job, fatherhood, and a million other obligations, those hours are not easily replaced.

Beyond that, it’s quiet in my writing room – or as quiet as reasonably possible with my adorable 1-year-old son crawling around (although realistically, I never write outside of his sleep times unless my lovely wife happens to have him out and about). In addition to them, a faithful bearded dragon named Leo used to be my fellow ward, watching me through scaly eyes for hours as I annoyed him with my keyboard clicks; sadly, he recently passed on to the great Australian desert in the sky. I’m not sure he’ll be replaced any time soon, but they are such intelligent, entertaining little creatures, it’s hard not to get the itch to start over with a new one.

So that’s it! One day perhaps I’ll have a lavish study, replete with leather-bound books and shelves made of rich mahogany, but for now, I like my workspaces as spartan as I can make them.

As clouds of civil war gather over a dying empire, two friends and generals find themselves on opposite sides of the factional divide. Now, they must sacrifice everything to save themselves from their realm and their realm from itself.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Ten years, two months and this morning, Kyrus thought, blinking away drops of sweat. Yet still… still it’s not any easier.

For the thousandth time, his hand slid to a blade’s hilt, body braced against a gust ripping through the sweltering berry thicket. Wide eyes scanned the crush of steamy greenery all around him, ears hearing only his own short breaths and a heart that pounded like a drum. Even as the wind petered out, his anxiety held firm, held him frozen in place.

Ten bloody years of this… a wonder I’ve any wits left about me at all. He grunted. Or do I have any?

He’d grayed since then, since his first days in Valogar. Wrinkled too. Bones ached from the constant marching, mind frayed from the perpetual fear of knowing they were out there, somewhere, always itching to add another Rokhish scalp to their belts…

Win a $10 GC - The Wolf's Torment by Stephanie Burkhart

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Stephanie will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

It's 1865 in Moldavia, a country nestled against the shores of the Black Sea, and Crown Prince Mihai Sigmaringen returns after receiving an education in England. His best friend, Viktor Bacau joins him. Mihai is intent on modernizing his nation, but he's also a witch, and it's time he embraces his heritage. The tasks in front of him are many including getting married.

Lady Theresa von Kracken arrives in Constanta as Mihai's intended. Mihai has vowed not to fall in love again, but Theresa manages to break the battlements around his heart.

In an unfortunate twist of fate, Viktor is bitten by a werewolf. Viktor's transformation threatens everyone around him including his wife's safety and Mihai's happiness with Theresa. Viktor's bite is the wolf's torment.

Enjoy this excerpt:

"Introducing Austrian Duke, Georg von Kracken, and his daughters, Ladies Theresa and Beatrice."

All the eyes in the ballroom turned on Theresa. The weight of the silence fell onto her shoulders. Why did it feel like she had an itch on her nose that under no circumstances she should scratch right now, though she was tempted.

Her father placed his hand in the small of her back and escorted her right up to the Moldavian royal family. King Stelian stood in the middle, Princess Sonia was on his left, and Prince Mihai was to his right.

She lightly nipped at her lower lip with her teeth. Her dream had done Prince Mihai no justice. He stood straight and tall, his stance emphasizing the force of his thighs and the slimness of his hips. His body was beautifully proportioned with dark, smoldering green eyes framing his handsome face. What firm lips he had. She tried hard not to stare at him, but his good looks had totally captured her attention.

Her father tapped her lightly against her back. Damn. She had to curtsey. Lowering her eyes, she did just that.

Beatrice curtsied as well.

"King Stelian, Crown Prince Mihai, Princess Sonia, may I introduce you to my daughters, Theresa and Beatrice."

Theresa's gaze swept over Mihai. His red, rich lips curved into a smile and he took her hand, placing a delicate kiss on her knuckles. A pleasant wave of heat slid up her arm and she took a quick breath to steady herself.

"Lady Theresa, you are more beautiful in person than in a dream." Mihai's wonderfully deep voice warmed her to her toes.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

Kassandra is a single, independent woman who prides herself on her own success. But when she’s asked by her best friend Laura to be the Maid of Honor in her wedding, Kassandra finds herself questioning her lifestyle. Helping Laura plan the wedding is no problem—she’s done it before for all their other friends. The first time was a blast, the second super fun, but doing it without receiving any help from the rest of the girls gets old really fast.

The whole event kicks off with the worst kind of surprise when Kassandra discovers who her friend's fiancé really is, and she's torn between supporting Laura's future happiness and hiding the deeply buried, intimate past she shares with the groom-to-be. Struggling to be the bigger person and do all the hard work on her own, Kassandra finds surprising comfort in Josh, the best man in the wedding and someone she's been avoiding for years. He's charming, thoughtful, handsome, and the worst kind of womanizer, but she just can't seem to stay away. All the while, Kassandra can't help wondering if the wedding could be any more cliché—until she finds unexpected ways to change things up a bit.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

This can’t be happening.

The person sitting at our table was definitely someone I knew. Someone I actually had been avoiding for quite some time.

“Well, well. Good morning, babe,” the beautiful blond said to me.

I knew this guy. I’d constantly met him at bars and pubs around the city. He was always well accompanied by attractive ladies, but that didn’t stop him from hitting on me. Persistently, he’d tried for the past couple years to get my number and into my panties.

This beautiful man and I had a history…well, not really. We had a history of not having a history. He was an artfully known womanizer in the circles we frequented. Knowing exactly what I’d be getting myself into if I ever decided to tap that drop-dead gorgeous body of his, I had no choice but to reject him over and over again.

One drunken night I almost caved in.

Laura couldn't be marrying this man.

“Oh, God. Not you. You’re a man whore!”

He stood as soon as the statement escaped my lips. He didn’t look offended. I guess he was used to my rejections by now. “Nice to see you, too,” the handsome man said. “I like knowing that you miss me.”

“Miss you? You wish! I can’t believe you’re marrying my best friend.” And I really didn’t.

“No offense, babe, but I’m not the one marrying Laura. I’m Ed’s friend. Name’s Josh, remember?”

Oh, right. Josh. For a moment there, I thought I had to talk Laura into canceling the wedding.

Two years have passed since mankind faced extinction.

Brain Rhodes and his cousin, Steven, are leaving the protection of their underground bunker for the first time, after a cataclysmic war and unrelenting disease ravaged the earth.

On the other side of the North American continent, young Simon Kalispell is leaving the safety and seclusion of his cabin deep in the woods, traveling with his aging canine companion, Winston.

For individual reasons, these men are traveling east, where the fragmented lives of a small number of survivors will soon be decided by the choices of a corrupt few.

Simon Kalispell and Brian Rhodes are not yet aware, but the strength that resides inside them will soon be tested, and destiny will call for their fates to be forever intertwined.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Brian looked down the entry chute to Steven at the bottom. He knew that five minutes ago, the only thought going through Steven’s mind had been the complete and utter fear of facing whatever unknown nature of humanity might remain outside that bunker door. Now his cousin looked panicked as the filtered light reflected the sheen of sweat on his forehead, his body tensed, as if the all-encompassing blackness in that room was squeezing him toward the exit. Steven’s eyes darted over his shoulder in the direction of the one piece of equipment they had not shut down entirely—the walk-in freezer. The red, glowing light from the switch illuminated the far wall. Steven seemed frozen, transfixed.

Not the time to be thinking about what’s in there, Brian thought.

Two worlds collide in this action novelette. Zombies have destroyed civilization. Gasoline fuel is no longer an option, but humanity must find a way to survive. In response to trying to restore our way of life, we engineer franken-monsters. Because of their small brains and massive sizes, these beasts make quick work of farming and clearing land. These large creatures are immune to the zombie virus and perform excellently in loud conditions. They are easy to train. They behave like war horses, prone to help charge in and defend our livelihood.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Blues often hunt for weaker and sick humans. Standing your ground and appearing strong will scare off blues. In the beginning, we had become so used to being the top of the food chain, that the thought of being hunted was frightening. Most of the population ran, and that led to massive feasts. Furthermore, our distaste for mandatory physicals meant pockets of blues formed. Gun owners and others brazen enough to stand their ground often kept their ground. Yet, as humans became replaced, the blue’s tactics became more complex. Soon, only standing your ground with a gun was not enough. The practice still works in isolated regions, but the best escape from a blue is to retreat to a safe city.

New Eye City was formed for just that reason. Survivalists knew how to build flash communities, which would then focus on walls. As many of you know, gasoline fuel was no longer an option as the infrastructure collapsed around humanity. Cars, trucks, and farming equipment gathered rust from disuse. Humanity needed a new approach to surviving.

WITHIN A CAPTAIN’S FATE by Lisa Olech

Wherever the tides take you . . .

Guided by the winds of fate, Henry ‘Ric’ Robbins arrives on a hot June day in Port Royal. But the moment he sets foot on what should be a pirate’s paradise, he’s driven to steal a woman destined for slavery, survives the worst natural disaster to ever hit the isle of Jamaica, and answers the call to be captain of the Scarlet Night.

Jocelyn Beauchamp’s life is one of privilege—until she is rudely thrown into the hands of pirates. Freed from the chains of her cloistered society, Jocelyn is drawn to her newfound life at sea—reckless, thrilling, and utterly unpredictable. And the man who saved her life not once, but twice—why not do it all over again?

VEILED IN BLUE by Lynne Connolly

It is up to the Emperors of London to protect the throne—without risking their hearts…

Governess Eve Merton would have fallen into serious trouble on her walk home if a handsome stranger had not stopped to help her. But when Mr. Vernon gives her a lift on his horse, he makes no secret of his attraction. As a well brought-up young lady, Eve does her best not to notice, but when he sets about courting her, she knows she’s in trouble. For she has a secret: she is the daughter of a deposed king, which means not only is she without a dowry, but also that her life is in danger…

Little does Eve know that Mr. Vernon has secrets of his own. In truth, his name is Julius, Lord Winterton, and he’s well aware that Eve is the offspring of the Old Pretender. In order to save his sister, he must convince Eve to wed—though he wants nothing to do with love. But as the two grow closer and an attempt is made on Eve’s life, Julius may realize that fighting his heart’s true desire is a battle most pleasurably surrendered…

Enjoy an Excerpt from Veiled in Blue:

He swung from the saddle and reached for her. The horse was too weary to take advantage of his lightened load and stood patiently while Mr. Vernon slid his hands around her waist and lifted her effortlessly to the ground. He did not release her immediately.

Eve held the empty basket like a shield, the only protection she had against more intimate contact.

He smiled down at her. He was half a foot taller than her, if not more. “Do you think you can take your own weight, or should I carry you to your door?”

“Sir!” Scandalized, she opened her eyes wider while heat rushed to her cheeks. The notion of all the residents of the green watching while he picked her up was unthinkable. Or almost. The small part remaining was her romantic self, the part she ruthlessly crushed. It lingered this time to whisper, What if I let him? in the dark recesses of her mind.

Showing nothing but polite gratitude, she thanked him kindly. “I daresay you will be away in a few days, so I doubt we will meet again. So allow me to thank you now. I am deeply grateful for your help, sir.”

Now, looking directly at him, she sensed danger lurking in the clean-cut features. This man had a wild edge, well concealed but there. Intelligence gleamed in his eyes, together with the wry humor he had displayed during their journey. For one reckless moment, she thought he might tighten his hold, force her to drop the basket, and kiss her. His lips were full, eminently kissable. Not that she had much experience.

I was born in Leicester, England, and lived in our cobbler’s shop with my parents and sister. It was an old house and most definitely haunted, but I didn’t find out until I left that my great uncle had hung himself in the living room! But I think our ghost might have been older than that. It was built on the site of the old Roman cemetery, and the land had been constantly inhabited, being in the centre of town. Then, when the council bought the house from us to build a road, my grandfather retired and my father went and worked for the Post Office. My mother was a sample machinist; that is, she worked with designers on the prototypes (models or samples) of garments. So I was very well dressed! We bought a relatively modern house in the country, and my mother was blissfully happy. It’s all very well living in a large old house, but it’s a dreadful task to keep it clean and warm!

My mother's side of the family are Romany gypsies, although sadly we haven't any of the old trailers that are so astonishingly beautiful. I was taught to read the Tarot cards, and I usually use two packs; the Rider pack for simple readings and the Crowley Thoth pack for the complex stuff. I've always had an interest in the paranormal and it's been a delight to be able to put some of this into my novels.

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award a $25 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Interior designer Marissa O’Brien has sworn off long-term relationships, instead protecting herself from a broken heart by following a specific set of rules when it comes to her many flirtations and first dates. She’s content to just have fun in the world of romance, but all her rules fly out the window when she grabs the attention of a sexy, international stranger during her weekly Girls’ Night Out.

Josh Mattingly has spent the last two years trying to turn over a new leaf, focusing on his role in the family corporation and erasing his womanizing reputation. In Asheville, North Carolina, on business, the last thing he’d planned on was getting involved with a local girl. But one encounter with Marissa has him hooked. He soon falls hard for the designer, and now he’s terrified to reveal his romantic past for fear she’ll bolt.

Marissa recognizes a playboy when she sees one and tries to keep her attraction to Josh under wraps–until they share a passionate kiss that leaves both of them singed. Still, she knows their love affair has an expiration date, and everything is destined to end once Josh finishes his business in Asheville. Now, along with showing his family that he’s left his old habits behind, Josh has a new challenge–proving to Marissa that she can trust him with her heart.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“There’s no crime in a girl looking.” Affecting a nonchalant shrug, I lift my bottle, take a long drink, and try to convince myself Josh isn’t staring at my lips.

“No,” Josh replies, something shifting in his eyes. “No, there’s definitely no crime in looking.”

I turn, my free hand raised in a pretty wave that’s meant to dismiss him. I’m not sure whether or not I want him to follow, but I know I can’t stand this close to him anymore. Escape. Back to the safety net of my friends before I get singed.

He catches my arm between elbow and wrist, his grip sliding down until his long fingers lace with mine. Every atom in my hand, arm, body explodes with the force of nuclear fusion, forcing me to stop before I fall down.

Forget about breathing.

Sense of sight?

Rendered temporarily absent, though I can still hear him say, “Can I at least find out your name before you go report back to your pack of lady-friends?”

Slowly my vision returns, honing in on a face that looks to have been carved from bronze. “Marissa O’Brien.”

I never—and I mean never!—give my last name if a guy hasn’t made it past the chat-me-up stage. I leave him whipped into a frenzy and wondering where he went wrong, while I saunter back to my own content corner of the world.

But not Josh. He brings my hand to his lips in a crazy, Old World gesture of romantic chivalry that practically knocks me out of my boots. Then he says, in his out-of-place, richly accented baritone, “Maybe I’ll run into you again, Red. Enjoy the rest of your night.”

The Writer's View by Lina Sage

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lina will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The view of my writing space is nothing too exciting. I write in my office. My office is a small room and if I had to guess it would be about 100 sq. ft. I’m somewhat of a neat freak so I like to keep things tidy at all times. Although, when I’m in writer’s mode, my office could get quite messy. Currently it is very neat and tidy as I just cleaned it two days ago. In my office I have a book shelf full of books. I have mostly spiritual/self-help books on my book shelf. I always like to order hardcopies of these books so that I can keep going back to reference them. I download most of my fiction books onto my Kobo.

The view outside my window is quite beautiful. I see many different types of trees turning their fall colors. There’s a mix of yellow, reds and greens. It really is a beautiful sight.

I believe that writing is one of the highest forms of creativity. In saying that I would like to share one of my blog posts on creativity called Conquering Fear with Creativity:

Structure is nothing but stunted growth of fear hiding itself and inhibiting your fullest potential to flourish and create. We are all creative beings. Listen to the flow of the river and you shall see that it doesn’t lay stagnant, instead it moves as a current. Let your inner compass guide you and don’t stay stagnant, even for a second. For the minute you stay stagnant you inhibit your personal growth, and if you do this then the light of your creativity will perish into the darkness.

We are all creative beings. Let’s not forget our purpose and why we are here. Do not let one single person stunt your creativity because they are too consumed in their own darkness to achieve and create. Step into the light. Love, dance, sing, draw, laugh and create. That is our only purpose here. To stunt your creativity is to kill your soul. We are not concrete and abstract. We are artistic and bend whichever way our heart desires. Bend with your heart. Cry with your heart. Do not shut down your heart, for your heart will bleed and beg for mercy. Do not shut down the very reason why you are here. You are here but only momentarily … for a smidgeon of a second. Then your star will be replicated by another. How do you want to exist? Ask yourself that. Do you want to fill up your day consumed in nonsense or open up your heart to feel, create and fulfill the very essence of why you were put here? We all exist for a reason. Go inside and find your existence, bring it too light and let it flourish. You can only do this through creativity.

Shortly after I was born, my family left Vietnam’s strict Communist regime by escaping on a tiny fishing boat in the middle of the night.

Luckily, Canada accepted us as refugees and we were excited for a new beginning. However, any hopes of a brighter future vanished before an abusive alcoholic father who’s repeated physical violence against my mom left me screaming for any stability. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse clouded my childhood years leaving me so damaged that it changed who I was meant to grow up to be.

In my early twenties, I bought a house and converted it into a full blown marijuana grow op.

Soon after, I entered into the world of elite call girls and became one of the most sought after girls in my agency. By my late twenties, I was on top of the world and the proud owner of a multi-million-dollar luxury day spa.

Just when I thought I had it all, I made the ultimate mistake that ended in me losing everything and hitting rock bottom.

I was spiritually broken and in desperate need of healing. I had no choice but to reconcile with my past. This decision brought me down a miraculous journey that opened me up to consciousness and enabled me to exist in the space I do today; that of uninhibited peace.

The Last 10 Pounds: One Woman’s Journey to Love (by shedding Fear, Anger, Hatred…and Everything In-Between) is my personal journey and a testament that it is possible to heal and transform. To be the person you were born to be.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

“Uncle Quinn… please stop. Please stop Uncle Quinn! Stop it you’re hurting me!” I wailed loudly.

“Shhh… I’m just playing with you,” he replied with a sly look on his face, as he continued to grope me with both hands.

This had happened many times before, the constant touching and fondling of my private parts every time Uncle Quinn saw me. See the thing is, I didn’t make it easy for him because of my feisty nature. Usually I would be able to run away before he could really get a hold of me and on the times that I couldn’t get away, his inappropriateness would only last a few minutes until I would squirm so hard that he would finally release me from his grasp.

But today was different and I felt it immediately. His huge hand pinned down both my tiny wrists and with his other hand he proceeded to maliciously rip off my summer jumpsuit. His weight crushed my petite frame to the floor so much so that I couldn’t move. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t create enough wiggle space to escape his 6’2 lanky stature. With his free hand he pushed his fingers inside me with such ferocity that a loud scream escaped my mouth before I could even discern what was happening.

A Vegas cocktail waitress. An Indian herbalist. A British chemistry professor. An Italian-American widow. Four unique women with one thing in common: each is haunted by a tragedy from her past. The women are surrounded by ghosts long before they step aboard, but once they do...

Read an Excerpt:

Somewhere in the Atlantic, 1949

In an ocean as dark and still as death, the Queen floated. The scythe-shaped moon engulfed in mist gave off only a dank tinge of light. Waves skimmed lazily along the Queen’s sides, like the careless caress of an indifferent lover. She was only fifteen years old, but she’d already witnessed so much misery: war, love lost to tragedy, and once, a vile murder that had left a stain on her no sea she traveled had ever washed away.

Now she was about to witness another. The killer’s rage was silent and patient. And yet, she could feel it. In desperation, the Queen willed her fog horn to blow…

Under the cover of the dimly lit stairwell on the deserted sports deck, the sailor waited. He’d timed it well. The watch wouldn’t make his rounds up here until after it was over.

Long before he could see his prey, he heard the click of her heels on the planked wood, echoing off the water as she approached. He pressed himself back further into the darkness as she came into view, her eyes focused on what he’d stolen to lure her, carefully placed so that it would be visible to her while he remained hidden. As she bent to pick it up, he stepped swiftly behind her and clamped his forearm around her throat, cutting off her scream and her breath as he pulled her into the shadows.

She felt her windpipe close up and the blood rush to her head. She couldn’t twist around to face him, but ─ oh, God ─ she knew who he was. How ironic. In a life as mousy as the color of her hair, the one impetuous thing she’d dared do, would end her. As dreary as her life had been, she didn’t want it to be over.

So she struggled. She dug her nails into Death’s rigid forearm and clawed at the skin on his elbow. But he only swore at the blood she’d managed to draw and kept that arm hooked resolutely under her chin, dangling her legs up off the deck, pressing even tighter against her throat as she kicked. He shook her and she felt the cool night air hit the sole of her foot as one of her shoes fell off. The thump it made against the deck startled him. He lost his vice hold on her for an instant and she tried again to scream. He slammed his other hand across her nose and mouth. With a rush of stinging pain, the salty iron taste of blood filled her mouth, mingled with the smell of his familiar aftershave. Who’d have thought Death would come wearing Old Spice? He’d groomed himself as carefully for her murder as he once had for her seduction. She went queasy with the realization that his arms were not the only part of his body that felt rigid against her.

But mere seconds later, she was too lightheaded to feel disgust or even fear. She now lay in his arms, compliant, his hand still pressed against her bloodied mouth and nose. Her head was tipped back as he continued to suffocate her and she could see the night sky, a depthless backdrop for the stars that flickered through the gauzy veil of ocean fog. And the moon looked like a grin. Lovers walking the decks below must think it all so romantic. Dimly, she could hear the band playing in the ballroom. She was amazed she could even recognize the tune ─ a new one, just come out that year:

“Some enchanted evening, you may meet a stranger…”

Her final act was to pray that he wouldn’t dump her before she was truly dead. As cruel as his arms were, at least they were warm. She didn’t want the ice cold water to be the last thing she felt.

No one's ever captured a Sasquatch.

Until now.

Sasquatches have roamed the Pacific Northwest for centuries, hiding in the wilds of the northern territories and protected by the Lummi nation.

When Seattle author Ethan Lane’s secret is exposed after a first date with Ruby Parsons goes wonderfully right, then horribly wrong, he’s faced with betraying his clan or losing his only chance at true love and a normal life.

Sometimes love gets hairy.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

A friend indeed… excerpt: This is right before the big date!

Ruby finished the last paragraph of The Call of Cthulhu on her phone then reread it once more. She’d reread it each of the past three nights like she was cramming for finals. One passage stood out to her. “Who knows the end? What has risen may sink, and what has sunk may rise. Loathsomeness waits and dreams in the deep and decay spreads over the tottering cities of men.”

Right. The perfect romance-inspiring fiction to bond over. Clearly, they were a match made in Heaven.

Crap.

“Quit making that face,” Claire said, pulling up to the curb in front of the theater.

“I can’t. I’m nervous.”

“Then let me come with you, like I promised.”

Ruby shook her head then stuffed her phone into her tiny purse. “No. I can do this. It’s a public place. Look, there’s a line already. I’ll be fine.”

“At intermission, you go to the bathroom and text me an update. I want to know how it’s going. Text me again at eleven, when it’s over. I’ll come get you then or, if you want to go out for drinks or something, I’ll pick you up there. Do not get into a car with him, though. Do you understand?”

Ruby sighed. “Now you’re concerned?”

“Cautiously optimistic and 78 percent sure he’s not a serial killer.”

“That’s a much lower percentage than you stated earlier. You’re not helping.”

“I’m kidding.” Claire unlocked the car doors. “Promise about the texting. I’m fifteen minutes away. Don’t make me put your face on a milk carton. I’ll use the one I took after you pulled your stocking cap off after skiing at Snoqualmie.”

“That’s low.”

“These are serious times. The stakes are high.”
