Win a $20 Amazon/BN GC - Q&A with MK Schiller, author of Variables of Love

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding three separate prizes: a $20 Amazon or B/N GC, a $10 Amazon or B/N GC, and an ecopy of Variables of Love, to randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Welcome to My World of Dreams and thanks for stopping by to visit with us. Did you do any kind of research to determine the details of your characters’ lives / lifestyles?

Variables of Love is a multicultural love story that deals with a girl struggling between arranged marriage and the hot as sin math major who steals her heart. Yes, it’s a nerdy love story, full of angst, bittersweet moments and a strong kick of spice.

It is a very personal story for me. It’s what happens when cultural expectations and personal convictions collide. I’ve borrowed from my own life experiences and culture to create this novel. It’s a story I’ve wanted to tell for some time, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to share it. Believe it or not, my search engines were all over the place. I did research into Stanford University, mathematical theories, swans, arranged marriages, small towns, and even artist’s canvas.

What would you consider the best book you ever read?

I’m not sure but The Velveteen Rabbit has always been special to me as a child and the first book I read to my own children so I’m going with that.

Who inspires you?

This is difficult because there are so many. I’ve always been in love with the idea of love. I suppose as a romance writer that’s par for the course. I am and will always be a reader first. I don’t have favorites per say, but here are a few of my recommendations. I’m thrilled to have read the works of these great ladies.

I love Mia Sheridan because she creates unique heroes. I love Abbi Glines for her innocent and strong heroines. I love Colleen Hoover for creating that sense of emotion when it comes to first loves and the struggle of youth. I love Debra Anastasia for shining a beautiful light in dark places. I love EL James for making me interested in a different side of sex and creating a poignant story from that.

Do you have strange writing habits?

Sometimes I look like I’m in a daze and not paying attention. Snapping fingers in front of my face isn’t a rare event. But this is me coming up with a plot and story angle. I work it out in my head. Unfortunately, it also makes me look very out of it.

What is your favorite quote?

“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.” Oscar Wilde

What sacrifices have you had to make to be a writer?

My time. I love writing. Even if the work doesn’t get published it provides a release for me. Unfortunately, it’s also time I don’t get to spend with my family.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Most definitely – I know it does because as a reader I admit, I judge books based on the cover. A good cover is very important to the buying process.

What do you think of “trailers” for books?

I like them when they are well-done. They give great snippets into a story.

How did you come up with the title? Names?

In this book it seemed fitting as Ethan was a math major and very practical. There are many variables that go into a love story. Ethan and Meena experienced them all.

What was the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

That I’m a pantser and I’m the most creative when I’m disorganized (I knew that on some level but the writing really proved it).

What’s the worst job you’ve had?

I was a meat clerk at a supermarket. At the time, I was also a vegetarian…not a great combination.

Meena Kapoor knows what life has in store for her. She's in her senior year at Stanford where she'll graduate summa cum laude, and then she'll begin her interviews...her marriage interviews. Meena is Indian, and she's never questioned that she'll have an arranged marriage like all the generations before her. Not until she meets gorgeous math major Ethan Callahan. Ethan's sense of humor and free spirit stir feelings in Meena she didn't know were possible outside of Bollywood movies. It doesn't hurt that he's charming and has the uncanny ability to make math sound like poetry, but Meena knows their equation makes no sense in the real world.

Ethan finds himself intrigued by the mysterious, beautiful girl, whose big, brown eyes reflect great pain. His goals are small at first - to make her smile and then to laugh. But he soon wants more, and though Meena is adamant they have no future, he convinces her to share the present. Ethan believes every problem has a solution, but with cultural expectations and family duty among the variables, they will struggle to solve the ultimate equation to find happiness.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“It is kind of cool…the mating for life thing. There are so few species that mate for life.”

I turned and stared at him, feeling my heart flutter by his very close presence. His hand twitched a bit, like it wanted to grab mine. Was he feeling the same charge of electricity I was? I wanted to be honest with him. After I told him, he would probably rather hang out with a swan.

“That’s why I love them. They are just like me.”

He didn’t seem frazzled by what I’d said. He was quiet, soaking in my words. Rachael told me statements like this were the fastest way to get a guy to leave you alone, but Ethan didn’t even seem surprised. “You mate for life, Meena?”

“My people do”

“Economists?” he asked with an amused grin.

“Very funny.”

“Are you saying there are no Indian divorces?” His question sounded genuine.

“There are exceptions to every rule, but we do have the lowest divorce rate in the world.”

“Why do you think that is?”

“It’s culturally discouraged.”

He nodded. “Maybe, it should be here too. But is that really the only reason? It makes it sound like it’s very difficult to get yourself out of a bad situation.”

“It’s difficult, but usually not impossible. That’s not the only reason. I think the marriages, in general, are stronger and more stable.”

“What makes them stronger? Religion? Culture?” I was quiet for a moment, contemplating my response. “Come on, the answer to the Western woes of wedlock could be solved by this very conversation. Surely, you have a theory.”

“Two words—arranged marriage.”

His eyebrows shot up. I had finally surprised him, but he didn’t hesitate with his next question. “People still do that?”

“It’s not as common as it was, but it’s not uncommon either. Most Hindu marriages are the result of an arrangement.”

“I don’t know anyone who would want to get married like that.”

I sucked in a deep breath, but didn’t let my eyes waver from his. “Yes, you do.”

About the Author:
I am a hopeless romantic in a hopelessly pragmatic world. I have a full time life and two busy teenagers, but in the dark of night, I sit by the warm glow of my computer monitor, reading or writing, usually with some tasty Italian…the food that is!

I started imagining stories in my head at a very young age. In fact, I got so good at it that friends asked me to create plots featuring them as the heroine and the object of their affection as the hero. You've heard of fan fiction... this was friend fiction.

I hope you enjoy my stories and always find The Happily Ever After in every endeavor.

I love hearing from readers so please write to me!

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jessica will be awarding a $10 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

She’s the other sister…

Overshadowed by the beauty of her older sister, Lillian is better known as the other Tisdale; unremarkable and unsure how she will ever deliver on the promise of her family's name.

He’s a rake in need of reforming…

Will Colton leads a frivolous existence, embracing notoriety instead of managing his family’s fortune. Determined to forget his financial burden and his father’s growing resentment, he maintains a lifestyle dedicated to pleasure and self-indulgence. When Will is invited to the Tisdale estate for an extended holiday, he never expects to become friends with the forgettable Lillian. But when a family secret comes to light, he must choose between leaving London and protecting the honor of one woman or staying and risking the reputation of another.

Upon his return, Will finds the girl he left behind has come out of the shadows and into her own. Lillian’s finally the center of attention, and not all of it good. With his own reputation in tatters, can a reformed rake lure her out of the hands of London's bachelors and back into his own arms? Can he escape his past and reclaim her heart, or has he lost her forever?

Enjoy an excerpt:

He didn’t try and crawl out of the hole he’d so easily dug for himself. Rather, instead of making an already awkward situation worse, he smiled. It was a cavalier sort of smile—one that she just knew he’d used hundreds of times before to get him out of this sort of trouble. Women were undoubtedly willing to forgive him most transgressions just by a flash of this winning grin.

Lord knew she was.

She’d never before met anyone so handsome, so charming, so…

A bolt of pain shot up her arm, as if God himself was punishing her for having such immoral thoughts.

“Enough,” he said. “We need to get you in front of a doctor. The sooner, the better.”

“Good idea,” she agreed. “How do you suggest we go about doing that?”

“First, we’ll need to secure your arm.”

She nodded. “You mean fashion a sling? I’m sure there’s something around here that we could use as rope. Perhaps ivy? There’s a great deal of it about the estate.”

His hand flew up to his chest. “What do you take me for, some sort of bushman? For heaven’s sake, I’m from Grosvenor Square, not some jungle. I wouldn’t have the slightest idea of how to go about accomplishing something like that.”

Lilly bit her lip. She’d never make it being jostled about without something to steady her arm. “Did you have something else in mind, then?”

Mr. Colton started removing his jacket. “I thought I’d use my shirt. I’ll rip some strips off of it and make the sling out of that.”

“Your shirt,” she repeated, suddenly questioning if she’d indeed suffered a head injury along with her broken arm.

He tossed the jacket to the ground behind him. “Yes.”

She was confused. “But then what will you wear?”

He was unfastening his waistcoat. “Nothing, I suppose .”

2_16 BookCover_WishFor Indigo Stevens, ballet classes at Miss Roberta’s ballet studio offer the stability and structure that are missing from her crazy home life. At almost 16, she hopes this is the year she will be accepted into the New York School of Ballet. First she must prove she’s ready, and that means ignoring Jesse Sanders – the cute boy with dimples who is definitely at the top of Miss Roberta’s List of Forbidden Things for Dancers.

But Jesse is the least of Indigo’s concerns. When she discovers her mom is an alcoholic, it simultaneously explains everything and heaps more worry on Indigo’s shoulders. As her mom’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Indigo fights to maintain balance, protect her younger brothers from abuse, and keep her mother from going over the edge. When the violence at home escalates, Indigo realizes she can no longer dance around the issue. At the risk of losing everything, she must take matters into her own hands before it’s too late.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“Need a little help?” Jesse says. A smile tugs at the corner of his mouth as he bends down to pick up the notebooks.

He has dimples. Oh God. I forgot he has dimples.

“You think?” I say, laughing nervously. God, I sound like a hyena.

He leans in to unhook my hair and I catch his scent, citrus and spice. My eyes fall on the necklace lying against the exposed skin of his chest. It’s a giant tooth or claw set into a silver spiral. I imagine how warm it is from touching his skin and I feel my face flush.

No time for boys, Indigo. I turn away with a jerk and sort the mess into neat piles.

The store manager shows up. “Okay, move along,” he says, scowling. “You’ve done enough here.”

“Does this mean we’re eighty-sixed from shopping here ever again?” I ask as we scurry away.

Jesse looks back over his shoulder. “That guy has a serious rod up his…”

I smile. “Hey, thanks for the help.” My smile fades when I notice my mother looking for me. Must. Run. Away. Before she comes over here and says something embarrassing. “Okay, well, see ya!” I run off and leave him standing there, still holding the stack of notebooks.

I'm breathing hard when I reach my mom. She looks at my empty hands quizzically. “I thought you were going to get some notebooks.”

“Yeah, I just couldn’t decide.”

“All right, then. We’re out of here.”

It’s the best thing she’s said to me all day.

Win a $30 Amazon/BN GC - Exclusive Excerpt: Steady Burn by Nichelle Rae

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Nichelle will be awarding $30 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Steady Burn is the 3rd book in the epic white warrior series.

Hathum has left Azrel for dead. Seemingly a long way from recovery after his attack, Azrel suddenly gets a vision of Yarin, the true leader of the Gleo'gwyns. He is being held prisoner in a decrepit dungeon and being mercilessly tortured by a Shadow solider.

Azrel realizes in that fearful instant that the world would share Yarin's fate if Hathum and the Shadow Gods defeat her.

Enjoy this exclusive excerpt:

“Send out the next prisoner!”

All at once, a hush came over the crowd and an awkward, uncomfortable silence loomed. The cage door opened and I stepped out. I was offered a blade no bigger than a pocket knife as a weapon. I sneered at it and continued walking onto the sand without it.

Every single being in the crowd was on their feet trying to get a look at me. Some were moving down closer to the sand pit, pressing slightly against the boarded boundaries. A bunch stood on their seats; others got on the tips of their toes to see over taller shoulders. Bodies started leaning forward and crowding around the bottom of the bleachers. I saw a few people start to whisper and point to me, but the silence was still deafening.

So, Glugnus had spread the word about me being here. This whole land knew I was here and my regime had stayed hidden. My heart sank a little when I realized why—they didn’t fully trust me. They wouldn’t dare expose themselves until they knew their leader could lead and protect them. They didn’t know me.

I sighed as I reached the center of the sand and faced the tall gates. The air was hot and thick and I immediately began to sweat. The intense pressure of the crowd’s eyes on me didn’t help much either. While I waited, I felt a tingle at the back of my neck, as if familiar eyes were on me. I turned around and my heart plummeted to the souls of my feet.

What Type of Romantic Are You? by D. L. Richardson

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will award to one commenter at every stop a prize consisting of one ebook, a bookmark and a laminated pass (the passes relate to the storyline). Leave a comment or ask the author a question to be entered in the drawing. Click on the banner to see the other stops on the tour.

What type of romantic are you?
by D L Richardson
I remember the first time my heart got broken. I felt like I would...hang on a minute. I’d like to say that I felt like I would die but the truth is, I put on my brave face and never let anyone see that I was crushed. I cried in private, but I wouldn’t let anyone see how much a boy had hurt me.

As you can imagine, I was writing a teen paranormal romance, Little Red Gem, and I found myself at a crossroads when it came to the ending. Do I give them both a happy ever after? Do I give her a happy ever after and not worry about him? And then I remembered that we are all individuals when it comes to dealing with love.

We wail, we kick, we scream, we beg, we fight, we cry, we don’t eat, we overeat, we hide form the world, we embrace life. The point is, there is no one formula when it comes to dealing with affairs of the heart. We all feel love our own way.

So I gave the ending that suited my feisty and independent 17 year old character, Ruby Parker.

Love is always in the air.

Maybe love is floating by on the gently breeze of autumn leaves. Maybe it’s blowing like a hot breeze across our cheeks on a summer night. Maybe love is whipping at us like a stinging winter frost. Or maybe love comes like flowers blooming and birds singing. We all experience love. Sooner or later. One way or another. It gets us all in the end.

And that’s why we devour the bodice tearing, Mills and Boon romance. Some of these books are designed to be read in a day – as in after the kids leave for school and before they come home. And some are sweeping sagas that explore the highs and lows of a love affair. When I was in my late teens, I was addicted to reading the bodice tearing sagas. I couldn’t even tell you a name of one of the books I read, but it featured a pirate, a ship, an island, a rogue who really had a warm heart, a hoity woman...sound familiar? Of course it does. Romantics love these books for their predictability.

First love.

Teen love is a huge hit with the readers, young and old. And teens experience love in the most unique way. Teen love lives in our memories our entire lives. Our first crush says a lot about the romance books we read. Was our first crush someone we knew? A new neighbour? A sibling’s friend? Someone we met on a holiday? All my crushes were on the new boy in the street. I never went anywhere exciting to meet anyone exciting, so it’s no wonder I find holiday romances are on my reading list. And the more exotic the location the better.

Most teen romance novels deal exclusively with first love and crushes. It’s not typical that a teen has a constant stream of boy/girlfriends. And if they do, the boy/girlfriends are no-one they really care about so the effects of a breakup are rarely bad enough to cause the apocalyptic tantrums we come to expect from that first broken heart.

True love.

True love is different to first love. I believe that true love comes in our late twenties. I’m sure others would disagree, but we barely even know ourselves in our teens/early twenties, so how are we to know what we want in a partner. Chick-lit is popular in this age group for the very reason that a lot of chick-lit deals with true love, and the consequence of true love - divorce. As readers, we want to know that we’re not alone in discovering that the man we once loved with all our hearts is now on the list of the people we most want killed.

You haven’t met The One.

There’s true love, and then there is true true love. The lasting kind that sees us into old age. It’s the love our grandparents display when they peck each other on the cheeks and hold hands on the porch. It comes from lots of hard work, and everyone tells you it’s worth it.

Cameron Diaz was a staunch denier of love. I once read an article that she had no intention of ever getting married. She liked to date and move on. A real commitment phobe. Sounded like a lot of guys I used to know. And here’s something interesting that my husband once said about people who say they’re “never getting married”. He said, “They just haven’t me The One”. I thought this was such a romantic thing to say, considering that he himself was a staunch denier of marriage and yet he was, marrying me. Goes to prove that what tickles our heart isn’t always flowers and candy.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks is a beautiful example of first love, true love and The One love. He tapped into a story that fulfils all the romantics in the world. No wonder he was offered one million dollars for this book. But Little Red Gem isn’t The Notebook. I wish it was. It’s a lovely story about a teenage girl who does crazy things for love and haven’t we all done that. I hope you enjoy reading Little Red Gem and it wakens memories within of your first love.

Love can make you do crazy things as Ruby Parker discovers when she dies and returns from the grave to unearth how much Leo Culver loved her. With the aid of bad advice from a ghost who is trapped by a curse, a little bit of magic courtesy of her unsuspecting half-sister, and a televised music talent show coming to town to hold auditions, Ruby Parker makes more of a mess in death than she ever did in life. Can she fix everything before it’s too late? Or will she spend eternity as a ghost, haunted by the unknown depths of love? Either way, one thing Ruby learns is that while love can make you do crazy things, it can make you do amazing things too. But at what cost?

Enjoy an excerpt:

…“I’d know if I was dead.”

While I watched my two best friends walk with arms around each other for emotional support, I wrestled with accepting Audrey’s version of the story. To do so meant I was dead. And dead meant I would never again speak with Leo. And there were so many words left unsaid, so much business left unfinished.

The final nail in my coffin came when a customer walked out and Audrey pushed me directly in front of the customer’s path. Instead of bumping into him, I fell through him, landing on my hands and knees. My skin tingled with pins and needles from where the body had passed through me. A loud noise filled my ears, similar to water flowing from a dam. For a split second my vision blurred. Then I watched in absolute horror as my hands and legs split into millions of tiny fragments.

Audrey might have been capable of delving into her mother’s magic bag to produce this neat trick, but I wasn’t.

I crawled into the gutter because it seemed the most suitable place for a reluctant spirit to bawl her eyes out. Audrey was kind enough to sit beside me with her hand resting on my shoulder; although we were both apparitions the contact still registered. I forgot about being angry with her and welcomed her company.

“Okay, I’ll admit this has been a rather extraordinary morning so you may be right.” I sniffed back the tears and turned to face her. “How did I die?”

“Your car slid down an embankment. You weren’t wearing a seat belt. Leo dragged you out of the car but it was too late.”

I jumped up. “Leo!”

About the Author:
Music first captured the creative interest of young adult author D L Richardson. From choir, to her first acoustic guitar at age ten, to singing with the school band and performing in school musicals. When she left school she helped form her own rock band where she sang lead vocals, played bass guitar, and wrote all the lyrics. At age 26 she sold her equipment and focused on writing instead. She now has three novels and one short story anthology published.

Little Red Gem is a tribute to her former life as a musician and contains some of the author’s actual experiences, though she has never entered a national singing competition to capture the attention of the boy she loves. It is also a tribute to those brave young women who charge forward in pursuit of their dreams.

She lives in Australia on the NSW South Coast with her husband and dog. When she's not writing or reading she can be found playing her piano or guitars, renovating the house, or walking her dog.

Enjoy the excerpt:

Date: December 2
Dear Diary,

I have a secret and it’s been eating me up inside, so I have to tell you. I lied to Angela. I told her I had a terrible sore throat and couldn’t come for the weekend. She said she was sorry and that she would invite me again.

I felt terrible, and then my throat really began to hurt. But I just couldn’t go to Springport for a whole weekend_even though I miss being around Angela.

Now that I have best friends here, I don’t feel the same way I used to about going back to visit. And I didn’t know how to tell Angela that. I could tell when we talked on the phone that she really wanted me to come. And she sent me a new selfie, holding a sign that reads I Miss You! She even told me that she doesn’t have a new best friend since I left. She really misses me. She also told me that Paul is in lots of her classes and he asks if she’s talked to me. How could I tell her I’m in love with Rob and don’t care about Paul anymore? How could I tell her that I have new best friends and want to stay here with them?

I did go to Sally’s instead, and we had the best time. Her mother ordered pizza for us and we drank Coke. We watched television and made popcorn and did each other’s hair with all of Sally’s older sister’s hair products we found in the bathroom. I look silly with curly hair. We kept laughing and falling on the floor and giggling, and we played this fun game that Jackie learned in camp last summer. We all lay down on the floor and we each put our head on someone else’s belly. Someone says, “Ha-ha,” and then the next person says, “Haha-ha,” until everyone is laughing. Then you can’t stop laughing because the belly you are on is bouncing all around under your head.

Sally’s mom got really angry at all the noise we were making, and we had to turn off the lights and pretend to go to sleep. I hardly slept a wink, though. I was so excited and having so much fun with my new friends. I was tired the next morning and really did have a sore throat when I went home, but I didn’t care. It was worth it to have so much fun.

In the course of working with my clients, I originated the idea of THE ENCHANTED SELF(R), a positive psychology therapy where I teach people how to recognize and utilize their strengths, talents, skills and even lost potential. I have developed a number of methods, including using our memories to rediscover what is right about ourselves and our lives, rather than what went wrong, helping people to overcome adversity, experience positive emotions and live the good life!

Since developing this concept, I've been able to use many tools to bring the Enchanted Self to everyone, particularly women and girls. I've written many books, starting with THE ENCHANTED SELF, A Positive Therapy, and then Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU! My books for girls are very popular, as they are great fictional reads and also help deal with many of the questions that trouble kids as they move into the tween and teen years. For decades the US Marines funded a top-secret unit known as Elite Recon. A deadly group of men and women sent to infiltrate dozens of countries completely undetected. Mission objectives so extreme casualties were not only probable, but expected.

The current batch of operatives had returned from hundreds of assignments unscathed…until one mission went horribly wrong. Several men lost their lives and the group disbanded. The remaining leathernecks were scattered in the wind with new identities. They were told to blend in. Be normal. Or face being forever silenced just like their fallen brothers.

Pfft.

“Ah,” he grunted and slapped at the dart embedded into his neck.

Who tracked him down? Russian intelligence? Red Wolf? Or was the US government ready to make sure he was a mistake that never came back to haunt them?

Adrenaline shot whatever drug they loaded him up with through his blood stream like a rocket, and instantly his body went heavy as though sand filled his veins. His knees were gave way as the bone had been replaced by Slinkies. He bobbed and stumbled into the railing.

Stay calm. Stay the f**k calm.

“It’s best if you don’t resist us, Steele,” said the tallest of the trio. Other than the height difference, the three looked like triplets in matching wetsuits and face masks.

American accent? So, he was being called home.

“What? You thought I’d make this easy for you?” he sputtered past numb lips and inched back, searching for a way to escape.

At this point it was looking as if the only option was over the railing to the open ocean below. If he was limp enough, he might be able to pop to the surface like a cork. If not, well…

“We’ve come to collect you.”

“Really? I’m no f***ing postage stamp.”

With the last of his energy, he swung his leg around with a roundhouse kick, knocking the front man into his buddy behind him. Spots floated in his vision as he threw a right hook followed by an upper cut. From the sounds of grunting and a gasp of pain, he knew he connected with something, but he couldn’t tell what.

Two pairs of hands latched on to his arms and pulled him to the ground.

“Nice to see he hasn’t lost his spirit,” one of them said. “Even doped up, he still packs a bunch. Damn, I think he broke a tooth.”

“You’re so dead,” he slurred as the world went black. Either the ghosts put a bag over his head or the drugs victoriously sucked him under. “Dead, you… mother…”

* * * * *

Sweat trickled down his cheek. The sweltering fabric pressed against his face added to the discomfort of a throbbing head. Exhaustion weighed him down as though he’d hiked a hundred miles with an eighty-pound pack on his back.

Steele licked his lips and tasted nothing but nappy cotton and an acrid, metallic aftertaste. The nauseous feeling reminded him of his time in training when he had been drugged to condition his body to withstand enemy torture.

Drugged.

What the hell?

His eyes flew open to a vision of black, black and more black.

Oh… Right.

Memories of his last moments on the oil rig came flooding back. The men in black, the sting of the needle, and missing his former life so badly, he’d been tempted to jump into the ocean and sink to the rocky bottom.

But he hadn’t jumped. He’d fought, fought with his last breath.

Huh, well what do ya know. He did have the will to live after all.

But for how much longer would he have the opportunity to do something with the rediscovered desire?

In typical hostage fashion, his arms and legs were shackled to a wooden chair. Judging by the sturdiness of the seat under his ass and the fine, smooth finish under his palms, this wasn’t a rickety dime store chair. It didn’t even creak as he shifted his weight from side to side. Hmm, so whoever was holding him had enough money to afford quality furnishings for their interrogations.

Since he couldn’t see shit through the hood, he slowed his breathing and tried to gather as much intel as he could.

Wherever he was, it was hot. A slight breeze from his right tickled the hair on his bare arms. The flooring under his shoes was solid, without the slightest give. Concrete probably. And the scent of gasoline and motor oil tickled his nose. An exhaust fan roared nearby, but the room was cavernous, lacking the noise reduction sensation from insulated walls. A warehouse, for certain, or something similar.

And he wasn’t alone.

Time to get the party started.

“Okay, you m*****f******s. You know I’m awake and I know one of you has a deviated septum. So let’s just get down to it, shall we?”

The click-clack of a pair of heels reverberating off the floor was an interesting surprise.
,br> “Remove his hood,” a woman ordered.

The fabric was ripped over his head, and he blinked in the bright light to focus his vision. Once the spots dissipated he locked on to the beautiful female dressed in the sexy-librarian pencil skirt and high heels. She had a semi-circle of a**holes standing behind her. Eight of them. The same men who’d drugged him.

At least he assumed they were some of the same men who had shanghaied him earlier. Gone were the wet suits, replaced with black fatigues, but the masks were still in place, and to his amusement one of the men sported a black and blue bruise on the bit of flesh visible through the eyeholes.

“Hello, Steele,” the woman said with a no nonsense smile. “My name is Poppy.”

The Writer's View: Shereé Danielle Parker

The view inside my writing space is full of different thoughts and ideas that give me a surge of energy and the level of creativity that I experience flows effortlessly. I surround myself with candles and soothing music to keep the momentum going when. When I write, it allows me to think about everything that I want to communicate through my words. The room that I am in only includes me with no interruptions as I feel free to express myself without feeling restricted or uncomfortable. I prefer to write in my lounge wear so that I am comfortable when I am sitting stress-free in my chair with my feet up and my laptop open and a cup of tea with lemon sitting on the table next to me which relaxes me. My cell phone is in another room which separates me from the outside world so that I can write without distractions. The view inside my writing space belongs to me and I am in love with the feeling that I have when writing.

The view outside my window is sunny and chilly but appropriate for a day of staying inside to write. People are passing by swiftly with no knowledge of the level of creativity that is occurring in my home. Cars are driving by with kids in them not knowing the wonders of how some one day their life could be greatly impacted by reading one of my books. I am inspired by the fact that the world has a place for me in it even though I prefer to stay inside to bring my dreams to fruition through writing. The view outside of my window is crystal clear like my thoughts and the feeling that I have about sharing my work with the people outside of my window.

Victorian England c. 1870

Operating as a British spy, Tristan St.James, the new Marquis of Wrenworth, barely escapes Afghanistan with his life in the spring of 1869. He plans to seek vengeance against the traitor who exposed him and for the agent he’s forced to kill. Returning to England, as a lord, he must marry. Haunted by guilt from the horrors of war, he avoids love at all costs, but finds himself drawn to the only woman who is disinterested in him.

Lady Evelyn Hurstine has waited over two years for the return of her love, a man who left for war in the East. But during that time, she suffered a brutal assault, resulting in a child and fear of any man touching her except for the man she once knew. The pursuit by the marquis scares her but her excuses against his proposal dwindle.

Their marriage strengthens into love until she discovers her husband isn’t the safety she believed but the one who killed the man she once loved. Caught in a world of intrigue and mayhem, Tristan must prove his love to her before the traitor destroys them both.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“I shall talk to him shortly.”

Evelyn raised her brows, eyeing over his shoulder. “Shortly may be now, my lord.”

Tristan turned. Barreling down the lawn, creating a wake in in his path, Evelyn’s father stormed toward them. Not far behind him was Huntington and his son. Tristan gauged their pace and the distance. He had a few seconds and could hear Evelyn’s foot tapping against the grass. Frankly, he was surprised she hadn’t crossed her arms in anger or left him. With every second, her behavior and decision to stay put only made him more interested in her. Damn! Her dowry and position made her exactly what he needed his English bride to be like, with a ramrod backbone and a defiance of societal rules. As Evelyn’s father got closer, there was only one thing Tristan could think of to ensure she become his. In one swift move, he turned, pulled her close, bent her backward, and pressed his cheek to hers. She gasped.

“Considering the situation, you need me as much as I need you. We are the perfect match,” he whispered, smiling and gesturing as if to kiss her.

They both knew in that moment she became his forever. The compromising position between two single people in a public setting was shocking to the ton.

Tristan heard the grass crunching under the footsteps of the Baron and his party. He didn’t look in their direction but eased back from Evelyn, watching her reaction. Suppressed fury blazed in her eyes, and her body was rigid.

“Naught, naught, naught,” he murmured. “To slap me would be appropriate but would serve you no purpose.”

Despite the fire in her gaze, she relaxed a little within his arms. “But it would give me satisfaction nevertheless,” she whispered defiantly, although she didn’t move.

Two friends...
Blood sisters till the end...
Until they're not.

One cold night in a boarding school dorm, two fourteen-year-old girls make a blood sister pact. Friends forever. As young schoolgirls, they're determined to find true love, learning the hits and misses along the way. As graduation nears, the girls have different outlooks for the future. Lucinda longs for adventure. Anna chooses city life and marriage. Finding their way back together, the girls head west for an experience of a lifetime until a handsome cowboy bursts into their lives, changing the course of their friendship forever.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Anna shook her head. “I’m glad it’s over.” She slowly closed her eyes and took the deepest breath possible. “But I’m proud of myself. I hate the sight of blood, but it was worth it.” She lifted her left hand to examine the cut. Blood trailed down her finger.

Lucinda also raised her left hand. Her middle finger dripped with blood. “Then let’s get started.” She lit a tall taper candle on the table. The flame flickered slightly giving the darkened room a mystical glow. “On this day of January the twenty-fourth …” She stretched out her arm toward Anna. “I, Lucinda Ann Walker, being of sound mind and body, make you my blood sister.”

Anna giggled. “You make it sound so formal.” She could tell Lucinda fought back a smile, but her face stayed solemn. “Alright, then.” Anna cleared her throat. “I, Anna Grace Douglass, also being of sound mind and body, make you my blood sister in the year of our Lord, 1923.”

They positioned their hands together, fingertip-to-fingertip, mixing the blood. Anna’s finger throbbed with pain, but she felt happy. She was thrilled she decided to come to this very exclusive private boarding school on scholarship. When she met her roommate she never dreamed they’d become best friends. Lucinda’s personality was bigger than life, quite the opposite of Anna. Now five months later, they were a sorority of two.
